TExT FoR REAdING

once a Frenchman who did not know English very well visited

England.

one day he went into the large hall of the post office with a letter.

There were many counters there with the words over them “tele grams”, “parcels”, “registered letters”, “stamps”. He went up to the counter with “stamps” over it and said to the girl behind the counter, “I want to send this letter. I have no stamps.”

“Here is a stamp for you”, said the girl. The Frenchman paid for the stamp and gave it back to the girl together with his letter. “oh no”, she said. “You must put the stamp on yourself”.

The Frenchman did not understand the girl. He looked at her and said, “Why must I put the stamp on myself?”

Now the girl looked at him. Then she said, “oh, sir, you didn’t understand me. I said that you must put the stamp on the envelope and you must do it yourself.”

“oh, thank you very much”, said the man “now I understand you”.
