I. Read and translate the text. Trafalgar Square is one of the most beautiful places in London

Trafalgar Square is one of the most beautiful places in London. It was laid out in 1829 to commemorate Nelson’s victory over the French at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1842 Nelson’s Column was erected. The column is 51metre high and a statue of Admiral Nelson is 5 metre high. The statue shows Nelson with one arm and one eye (he lost them in the battle). The pedestal of the column is decorated with 4 bas-reliefs of famous sea battles. These bas-reliefs were cast of French cannons. The column is guarded by 4 bronze lions. They symbolize the four countries of the UK. Every October 21-st there is a service under the column to commemorate Nelson.

Trafalgar Square is also famous for its fountains and monuments to English statesmen. The square is one of the busiest places in London. It is the place where people meet and it is the place for political demonstrations. At weekends Londoners like to come to the square to feed the pigeons.

Buckingham Palace

I. Read and translate the text.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen. The palace was built for John, Duke of Buckingham in 1705. It was rebuilt by a famous English architect John Nash in 1770s. Queen Victoria was the first who made the palace her official residence in 1837.

In some ways the Palace resembles a small town. It has a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. The kitchens sometimes serve up 600 meals a day. On great occasions it takes 3 days to lay the table and 3 days to do the washing-up. About 400 people work at the Palace.

When the flag is on the top of the Palace, it means that the Queen is at home. Every day at 11.30 you can see the beautiful ceremony of the changing the Guard. In front of Buckingham Palace is the Queen Victoria Memorial (her reign was the longest in British history).Once a year on the first Saturday of June they celebrate the official birthday of the Queen. This ceremony is called Trooping the Colour. Thousands of Londoners and tourists come there to see Queen’s troops in full dress, the Queen and her family.

to resemble – иметь сходство it means – это означает

post office – почта ceremony of the changing the Guard – церемония смены караула

to serve - подавать reign - царствование

occasion – случай, повод Queen’s troops – королевские войска
