ENGLAND

The 24th of December is called Christmas Eve. It is not a holiday in Britain. But it’s the big day for decorating the house. They decorate their Christmas trees with tinsel, coloured lights, coloured glass bowls, chocolate coins and candy canes. At the top they put an angel or a star.

The rest of the house is decorated with balloons, paper chains and mistletoe. The children hang up their stocking by the chimney.

Holly is a bright green plant with bright red berries. It stays green in winter. At Christmas, people decorate their houses, gifts, and food with holly.

You can find pictures of holly on Christmas cards, on gift wrapping paper, and in advertising. We also decorate evergreen pine trees with ornaments in green, red, and other bright colours. Even in Australia, where it is very hot at Christmas, and where most of the trees do not lose their leaves, we still carry on this tradition.

Mistletoe is another evergreen plant. It is different from holly. At Christmas, people stand under the mistletoe and kiss each other.

On the morning of the 25th, Christmas Day, the children wake up early to find their stockings filled with presents from Santa Claus. In 1863 Santa Claus got his name. He wears a red suit and smokes a pipe. He has a sleigh and reindeers. The most famous reindeer is Rudolph.

The Christmas dinner is usually eaten at midday or early afternoon. The dinner includes roast turkey, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and Christmas pudding.

At 3 o’clock in the afternoon on the 25th of December, the Queen gives her Christmas speech to the nation. It is broadcast on radio and television.

SCOTLAND

The Scots have their big celebration on New Year’s Day. On Christmas Day people sometimes make big bonfires and dance around them. Some also play bagpipes. The Christmas celebrations are pretty small because the Church of Scotland doesn’t care that much about Christmas.

WALES

The Welsh really like singing so at Christmas they have a lot of carol singers. A lot of people gather in the public square. The person who has written the best carol wins a prize. People here decorate their houses in the same way as the Englishmen. It is very important to make taffy. It is a kind of chocolate toffee. Instead of eating turkey the Welsh eat goose.
