Going out of the house/Leaving the house/Leaving home/When leaving the house (home) Rosemary never sus­pected that the next two hours of her life would prove so unusu­al /extraordinary.

«Madame, could you give me some money for a cup of tea?»

Rosemary looked back. She saw a little creature, a girl (of) her own age who was squeezing her coat collar with reddened hands and shivering with cold.

«Have you no money at all?» asked Rosemary.

«No, madame,» the girl said and burst into tears/burst out crying.

How unusual/extraordinary! It was like a scene from a novel. She was no ordinary/common beggar. Why not take her home? [Supposing (What if) she took her home?]. And Rosemary imag­ined herself saying to her friends later, «I just took her home with me, that's all,» and said aloud, «Would you like to come and have a cup of tea at my place?»

A light breakfast completely transformed the girl/changed the girl out of recognition. She had stopped feeling awkward and was lying back in a deep armchair (Her embarrassment gone, she was lying/sinking back in a deep armchair). To look at ^ her (Looking at her) it was hard to believe that just a short time ago she had been shedding tears/crying. Rosemary went on/kept watching her out of the corner of her eye stealthily. Suddenly Rosemary's husband came into the room/entered the room. Excusing himself/Apologizing he asked Rosemary to come into the library with him.

«Explain who she is» said Philip. «What does all that mean?»

Rosemary said, laughing, «I've picked her up in Curson Street.»

«But what are you going to do with her?»

«I just want to be kind to her. Take care of her, that's all!»

«But," Philip uttered slowly, "she is amazingly beautiful.»

«Beautiful?» Rosemary was so taken aback/astonished that the blushed to the top of her ears/to the roots of her hair. «Do you really think so?»

Half an hour later Rosemary returned to the library.

«I just/only wanted to tell you that Miss Smith isn't dining/isn't having dinner with us today. I couldn't do a thing with her. She wouldn't even take the money (She even refused to take the money)».

Рубен Льюис Гольдберг (1883 – 1970), американский скульптор, мультипликатор и писатель родился в Сан-Франциско. После окончания университета Калифорнии в 1904, он работал мультипликатором для многих газет и журналов. Он создал серию мультфильмов, которые были в то время очень популярны.

Среди его лучших работ – «А доктор дома?»(1929), «Экскурсия Руба Гольдберга в Европу»(1954) и «Я застелил кровать»(1960).

«Вот, попробуйте ананасовый сок,» - попросил вежливо Коупел, помошник. «Нет!», - заворчал в ответ Коллис П. Элворс.

«Но ведь это для Вас очень полезно, сэр»

«Нет!»

«Но ведь это по предписанию доктора»

«Нет!»

Коупел услышал дверной звонок и был очень рад покинуть комнату. Он встретил доктора Касвелла в вестибюле.

«Ничего не могу с ним поделать, - сказал он доктору. – Он не хочет пить даже ананасовый сок. Он не хочет, чтоб я ему читал. Он ненавидит даже радио. Ему ничего, ровным счетом, не нравиться!»

Доктор Касвелл выслушал информацию с присущим ему профессиональным спокойствием. Он все тщательно обдумал со времени его последнего визита. Это был необычный случай. Пожилой джентльмен был в очень хорошей форме для мужчин семидесяти шести лет. Но не мог удерживаться от покупок ненужных ему вещей. У него даже был сердечный приступ из-за последней его покупки захолустной железной дороги в Айове. С огромным ущербом для своего здоровья и кошелька, ему необходимо было выплачивать многочисленные долги за все покупки за последние годы.

Доктор поставил стул возле пожилого мужчины. «У меня есть предложение для Вас». – он спокойно сказал.

Старый Элеворс посмотрел на него с подозрением поверх его очков.

«Что вы думаете по поводу того, чтобы заняться искусством?» - доктор придержал стетоскоп на тот случай, если сердце старика не справится с таким ударом.

В ответ Коллис П. Элворс энергично вскрикнул : «Проклятье!»

«Я имею ввиду невсерьез, - сказал доктор, осознавая, что беда миновала. – Просто попробовать сначала с мелом и карандашами. Это будет, должно быть, весело!»

«Какая глупость!»

«Хорошо, - сказал доктор, поднимаясь. – Я только предложил».

«Но, Касвелл, как я буду начинать рисовать мелом? Это глупость, даже думать об этом!»

«Но об этом уже очень хорошо подумал! Я могу попросить студента из академии искусств, он будет приходить раз в неделю, чтобы научить Вас ривованию!»

Доктор Касвелл пошел к другу, Джадсону Ливингстону, директору акадимии искусств в Атлантике и объяснил свою ситуацию. Как раз в то время школе учился, подающий надежды, молодой человек - студент восемнадцати лет, Фрэнк Свейн. Ему нужны были деньги, чтоб платить за учебу. Он даже подрабатывал лифтером. Сколько ему нужно платить? Пять долларов за день. Прекрасно.

Наследующий день вечером Свейн в холле дома. Коллис П. Элворс смотрел на него оценивающе.

«Сэр, я ведь еще не художник». – дал ответ молодой человек.

«Ага?»

Свейн разложил на столе бумагу и карандаши. «Давайте попробуем нарисовать вазу, стоящую на каминной полке».

«Ну. Попробуйте, мистер Элеверс, пожалуйста»

«Ага»

Мужчина взял карандаш дрожащей рукой и нарисовал каракулю. Потом он сделал еще раз и соединил их грубыми линиями.

«Смотрите, молодой человек!» - как бы удовлетворенно огрызаясь.

«Как грубо. Чепуха!»

Фрэнк Свейн сохранял спокойствие, ему нужны были пять долларов.

«Если Вы хотите рисовать, то Вам нужно смотреть хоть на то, что Вы рисуете,».

Элеварс прищурился.

«Господи! А ведь это прекрасно! Почему я раньше этого не замечал!»

Придя на следующей недели, молодой художник заметил на столе рисунок, лишь слегка напоминавший вазу.

Лицо старого мужчины еще больше постарело, когда он сказал лукаво:

«Ну, и что Вы об этом думаете?»

«Очень хорошо, сэр. – ответил Свейн. – Но он слегка кривобокий»

«Ради Господа Бога, - Элеворс кричал – Я вижу это и сам, что две половины не сходятся».

Он добавил еще несколько линий дрожащей рукой и закрасил фон синим цветом, словно ребенок, работающий с раскраской. Он с подозрением посмотрел на входную дверь.

«Послушайте - он шепнул. – Я хочу Вам что-то сказать, пока никого нет, чтобы заставить меня пить ананасовый сок опять».

«Да, сэр». – ответил Свейн.

«Я подумал, а не смогли бы вы приходить ко мне дважды или даже трижды в неделю?»

«Несомненно, мистер Элеворс»

«Тогда договорились: будем встречаться в понедельник, среду и пятницу в четыре».

Неделю спусья, принес пожилому мужчине коробку акварельных и масляных красок.

Когда доктор Косвэл приходил в гости, они говорили о линиях подставки для дров в камине. Рассуждали о разнообразии палитры красок на картине с натюрмортом. Элеворс с гордостью показывал разные цветные пятна от краски на домашнем халате. Он даже не разрешал посылать его в химчистку.

Занятие искусством подействовало благоприятно на старика. За ним больше не замечали поездок в центр, где он мог быть вовлечен в покупку сомнительных предприятий с неизвестной платежеспособностью.

Доктор думал, что это будет безопасно, если Элеворс будет ходить в Метрополитен или в музей искусства и на другие выставки со Свейном. Полностью новый мир предстал перед его зачарованным взором. Он проявлял ненасытный интерес к галереям и художникам, которые там выставляли свои картины. Кто выбирал холсты для выставок? И тут ему пришло в голову… .

Когда весеннее солнце начало покрывать поля и сады своим теплом и светом, Элеворс нарисовал ужасную мазню, которую назвал «Деревья в белом». Затем он ошеломил всех своим обьявлением. Он собрался отправить эту картину на выставку в галерею «Лэтроп»!

Летняя выставка галереи «Лэтроп» была самой значимой если не по величине, то по качеству. Мечтой каждого опытного художника США было получение награды от «Лэтроп». И именно среди этих знаменитых художников Элеворс показать свою картину «Деревья в белом», которая была похожа просто ни на что.

«Если он это доведет до конца, Мистер Элеворс просто станет посмешищем. Его нужно остановить!» - умолял Коппел.

«Нет, нет- предупредил доктор. – Нам не нужно вмешиваться, чтобы таким образом помешать результату нашей работы».

Ко всеобщему удивлению – а особенно Свейна – картина была принята на выставку.

К счастью, картина была повешена в незаметном месте так, что она не могла привлекать внимание. Однажды Свейн пробрался в галерею и покраснел до корней волос, когда увидел «Деревья, в белом», как огромное яркое пятно на стене. А когда 2 студента остановились перед картиной и начали хихикать, Свейн в ужасе убежал. Он не мог перенести то, что они говорили.

Во время проведения выставки, старый джентльмен продолжал брать уроки, и редко упоминал о своей картине на выставке.

А за два дня до закрытия выставки курьер принес большой официального вида конверт Мистеру Элеворсу, когда Свей, Копел и доктор Касвел были в комнате. «Прочтите мне его, - попросил старик. – Мои глаза устали от рисования».

«Здесь написано, что администрация галереи «Лэтроп» имеет честь заявить, что главный приз в 1000$ присуждается Коллису П. Элеворсу, за его картину «Деревья в белом».

Свейн и Копел издали какие-то невнятные звуки. A доктор Касвел, как всегда используя свое профессиональное самообладание с большим усилием сказал: «Мои замечания, Мистер Элеворс. Хорошо, хорошо … понимаете ли… я даже не ожидал такое услышать. Но, ну сейчас вы должны признать, что искусство приносит больше удовольствия, чем бизнес».

«Искусство – это ничто, - огрызнулся старик. – Я купил галерею «Лэтроп» в прошлом месяце».
