ПЕРЕВОД ПРЕДЛОГОВ И СОЮЗОВ
При переводе английских текстов на русский язык могут возникнуть трудности с передачей следующих предлогов и союзов:
1. Два разных предлога относятся к одному и тому же имени существительному. Как правило, такие предлоги разделяются запятой, что может затруднять понимание текста оригинала. При переводе следует каждый предлог присоединять к имени существительному по отдельности. Чтобы избежать повторения, вместо существительного можно использовать местоимение или наречие.
Пример: One of the most functions of law is to protect, and to give effect to, the rights of individuals. – Одна из основных функций закона – это защита и осуществление прав личности.
Союз while может менять свое значение в зависимости от контекста.
Пример: In Paris the prolonged talk ended with a joint communiqué, which, while claiming some agreements, admitted differences. – Продолжительные переговоры, имевшие место в Париже, закончились опубликованием совместного коммюнике, которое хотя и утверждает, что имеется известная общность мнений, в то же время признает и наличие разногласий.
3. Наличие запятой перед некоторыми союзами может изменять их значение:
, or – может переводиться «иначе говоря», «т.е.», «другими словами».
, for – «ибо», «т.к.»
, which – «что»
Примеры:
The device may be relied upon, for it is of the latest design. - На этот прибор можно положиться, т.к. он является новейшей конструкцией.
This value is not effected, which is in agreement with the mathematical solution of the model. – Эта величина не изменяется, что согласуется с математическим решением этой модели.
4. Некоторые служебные слова могут выступать в роли предлогов и союзов:

Due to – из-за, благодаря, вследствие
In accordance with – в соответствии с
In addition to – кроме, в дополнение
In relation to – относительно, что касается
In spite of – несмотря на
in view of - ввиду
owing to – из-за, благодаря
thanks to – благодаря
with respect to – по отношению, относительно
6. Следующие союзные слова требуют особого внимания:
Given – при условии, если, если имеется
Provided (that), providing that – при условии, если
Save – за исключением того, что; кроме
Примеры:
Now the system recovers from a fault given a fault occurs – Теперь система освобождается от ошибки при условии, если ошибка имеет место.
The pipe is similar to the one being used save it is a bit wider. – Эта трубка подобна трубке, которая используется сейчас, за исключением того, что она чуть-чуть шире.
ПРАКТИЧЕСКИЕ ЗАДАНИЯ
ЗАДАНИЕ1. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на существительные с двумя предлогами:
a. Literature is at once a chronicler of, and an active participant in, life.
b. After a second journey to, and stay in, France he returned to England once again in 1793.
c. What interested them was his attitude towards, and relations with this girl.
ЗАДАНИЕ 2. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на значения союзных слов «given», «provided (that)», «providing that», «save».
a. Given a particular network, one can always examine all possible states of the system.
b. He had perfect knowledge of all the aspects of the situation save one.
c. The insertion of this metal does not change the temperature, provided the third metal is of the same temperature.
ЗАДАНИЕ 3. Переведите, обращая внимание на использование запятой пред союзами.
a. Intuitive conclusions based on immediate observations are not always to be trusted, for they are often misleading.
b. These are called postulates, or axioms.
c. This danger was increased by the distressing conditions of the roads, which made travelling slow.
ЗАДАНИЕ 4. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на составные предлоги:
a. Aside from this suggestions, however, there is no other information available about these mechanisms.
b. You will be punished or rewarded according to whether you have led a virtuous or a sinful life.
c. In spite of the complexity of the structure, the theoretical results may be considered highly satisfactory.
d. In view of this fact I decided to place much greater emphasis on general principles.
e. In view of the great importance of this subject, a separate chapter will be devoted to it.
ЗАДАНИЕ 5. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на служебные слова, выступающие в роли союзов и предлогов.

And it is precisely here that the comedies of Johnson and Shakespeare differ most profoundly; for whatever labels we apply to them, whatever the general nature of their materials, whatever their connections with classical or Renaissance concepts of comedy, these plays differ most significantly in that they dramatize two different responses to the human situation.
