Роберт (с растущим волнением). Ну и что же из того? Они давали мненадежду, в них черпал я мужество. Они помогали мне жить. Возможно, что все это нам должна была бы давать вера в жизнь. Но у меня нет этой веры. Ни религиозной веры, ни какой иной. Только этот проклятый скотный двор, в котором я должен жить. И это все. И вдобавок мне еще даны какие-то поганые железы, и секреции, и нервы, чтобы чувствовать и переживать. Но все это было не так уж плохо, скажу я вам, пока у меня были мои маленькие иллюзии.
Фреда (горько). Так почему же ты не оставил себе своих иллюзий, акричал и требовал правды всю ночь, как безумец?
Роберт (в большом возбуждении). А потому что действительно дурак. Стэнтон был прав. Это единственная причина. Мне, как ребенку, захотелосьпоиграть с огнем. Еще сегодня, в начале вечера меня что-то привязывало к жизни. Я хранил добрые воспоминания о Мартине. У меня была жена, которая, правда, не любила меня, но все же хорошо ко мне относилась. У меня были два компаньона, которых я любил и уважал. Было существо, которое я мог идеализировать. А сейчас...

Роберт. А моя жена любила его до самозабвения и изводила своей любовью.Один из моих компаньонов оказался лжецом, обманщиком и вором. Другой - один бог знает, что он такое, - какой-то до мозга костей испорченный истерик.
Обе женщины пытаются остановить его и успокоить.
Роберт. А существо оказалось коварной, похотливой мартовской кошкой...
Олуэн (почти кричит). Нет, Роберт, нет! Это ужасно! Это безумие!Довольно, не надо, пожалуйста, прекратите! (Несколько спокойнее.) Завтра все будет иначе.

"Dangerous Corner" – is the first play by John Priestley, regarded by its own author as a "technical exercise in dramatic art than genuine study of human character." Despite the author’s underestimation of his play it succeeded on stages of almost every country of Europe and America.
It goes without saying that the play is technically perfect. This applies particularly to the composition - the famous “time trick”, which we are now accustomed to, but which at the time of writing the play (1932) was a stunning innovation, confusing audience, readers and critics.
The "Trick" is that in the third act, after the fatal shot of Robert sounds, after a pause we, with the heroes of the play, are going back to the point of time in which we were at the beginning the first act. In other words, the beginning of the first act is repeated almost word for word - with some
cuts. Do you think it's boring? No! It's so exciting that you have a cold runs through the skin. Again, we see these people, this calm and happy united loving family, but now we know that this is cheating, we know that under the guise of friendliness and fine breeding lies, treachery and deception. That's what this "Trick" is. It enhances and deepens the fundamental idea of the play. We no longer put any faith in polite smiles and double-tongued words, and the ending is masterfully emphasizes their deceitful hypocrisy. That is the way how "purely technical trick", a brilliantly conceived and executed,contributes to the deepening and the disclosure of the nature and the ideological content of the play.
