Lasers

A device that has received a great deal of publicity is the laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). This device produces a beam of light composed of waves that are both monochromatic(all of one wavelength) and coherent(all in the same phase - that is all the peaks coinciding). These properties enable the beam to be used as a source of considerable energy at a sharply defined point, for welding, eye surgery, and similar applications. Because the beam is also extremely parallel, divergingvery much less than ordinary light, it is used in space communications - a laser beam that has traveled the quarter of a million miles to the moon is still narrow enough to be useful.

A laser consists of a solid or gaseous active medium in which the majority of the atoms can be pumped to an excited state by exposing them to electromagnetic radiation of a different frequency to the stimulating frequency. The active medium consist of (or in the case of a gas is contained in) a transparent cylinder which acts as a resonant cavity - the stimulated waves of the same frequency making repeated passages up and down the cylinder. One end of the cylinder has a reflecting surface, and the other has a partially reflecting surface through which the laser beam emerges.

In a ruby laser, for example, the electrons in the chromium atoms of a cylindrical ruby crystal are pumped to an excited level by radiation from a flash tube, thus producing a pulsed beam. Continuous wave lasers can also be made using mixtures of inert gases.

VI. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian:

1. Laser produces a beam of light composed of waves that are both monochromatic.

2. The principle on which the laser works derives from an earlier device called the maser, which operates at microwave frequencies rather than optical frequencies.

3. This principle is based on simulated emission that is, the emission of a photon by an atom in an excited state as the result of the impact of a photon from outside of exactly equal energy.

4. While the laser beam is off, the energy for the next flash is building up, and when it comes, it’s a very intense flash indeed.

5. A laser beam carries its energy in a compact form, until it’s absorbed when it strikes something opaque.

What is engineering?

The engineering industry makes most of the things that are essential and useful: aerospace, cars, hospital equipment, telecommunications and even the humble kettle. Engineering also makes most of the things other industries need from cash dispensers and electronic mail for the banking industry to microphones and staging for the entertainment industry. In the production of everything from chocolates to the Channel Tunnel, the key individuals are the engineers. It's an industry that still contributes significantly to the wealth of the UK, the very diverse manufacturing industry sector alone generates around a third of the national wealth and employs approximately 32 percent of the working population.

In recent years, engineering has changed out of all recognition. The sheer speed of change in many manufacturing technologies is startling. Thanks to the introduction of computers and new technologies like Virtual Reality, people are more in control than ever. This also means the engineering employers are looking for people with a wider range of skills and personalities: from lone-theorists to more gregarious and practical individuals; from managers who can handle people, lead teams and solve problems, to creative designers with a keen sense of market realities. Engineering needs them all — women as well as men.

Minerals

Minerals are natural compounds formed through geological processes. The term "mineral" encompasses not only the material's chemical composition but also the mineral's structure. Minerals range in composition from pure elements and simple salts to very complex silicates with thousands of known forms (organic compounds are usually excluded). The study of minerals is called mineralogy.

To be classified as a "true" mineral, a substance must be a solid and have a crystal structure. It must also be an inorganic, naturally-occurring, homogeneous substance with a defined chemical composition. The chemical composition may vary between the members of a mineral system. Mineral-like substances that don't strictly meet the definition are sometimes classified as mineraloids. Other natural-occurring substances are Nonminerals. Industrial mineral is a commercial term and refers to commercially valuable mined materials.

There are currently just over 4,000 known minerals, according to the International Mineralogical Association, which is responsible for the approval of and naming of new mineral species found in nature.

Educating tomorrow's engineers

Engineering education developed very differently on the Continent and in the UK. On the Continent, engineering and technical sciences were set up in technical universities, while in the U K engineering departments were set up in multi-discipline universities. As a result, the Continental engineering education is a more professionally oriented subject, while in the UK the emphasis was on engineering science. The Continental technical universities have developed a much closer relationship with industry. In Germany, there are many visiting industrial professors, who will spend a day in the University. In France much of the lecturing is provided by staff from the appropriate industries.

Lastly, the objective of engineering education and training in any country should be recognized. The main objectives of undergraduate education are to educate and train people to think and search out knowledge for themselves, and to have the self-assurance to apply it to the job in hand. Industry must recognize that a graduate will need training in the specific area in which he is working, and must also be prepared to encourage him to attend continuing education courses as appropriate.

The education and training of engineers must be a partnership between industry and higher education, which extends from undergraduate education and training through to post-graduate courses and research.
