UNIT 1

Text 1. ABOUT MYSELF

Hello, friends. Let me first introduce myself. My name is Boris or Borya for my friends. My surname or last name is Sokolov. I was born on the 2nd of October in Sochi, Krasnodarsky Krai. This is the most beautiful city in Russia situated on the Black Sea coast. Now I am a first-year student at the Technical University. In four years I'll be an engineer. I’m going to get a Bachelor’s degree.

Now let me describe my appearance. I am tall and slim and have fair hair and blue eyes. Some people say that I am handsome. I think I am just good-looking. I love sports and music. I was very serious about a career in gymnastics when I was in the 5th form. But then I broke my arm and doctors didn't let me go in for gymnastics. I love to listen to modern music and dance, especially I enjoy street dance. I dance a lot and I hope I am good at it. I also love swimming. I always swim in the Black sea when I visit my parents, my dear family.

I would like to tell you about my family. There are five people in our family. My father's name is Vladimir Stepanovich. He is a mathematician by education and businessman by profession. My mother's name is Tatyana Petrovna. She is a housewife. She has much work about the house because I have a younger sister. She is a schoolgirl. My sister Natasha is in the fifth form. My grandmother, my mother's mother, lives with us. She is verykind. Though she’s over 70, our grandma is active, enthusiastic and helps usa lot.

Our family is very friendly, we have many friends. In summer many relatives come to visit us. And, of course, they use achance to spend several weeks in beautiful Sochi.

In May I finished school No 17 in Sochi. I did well in all the subjects but my favourite subjects at school were Physics and Computer Science. I also enjoyed English lessons.

I am very interested in learning English because I always wanted to become a programmer or maybe a businessman. I also think that the knowledge of foreign languages helps in everyday life and career.

Two years ago I travelled much around Europe. I visited France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. There the knowledge of English helped me a lot.

As you see, my biography isn't very long yet. But we'll meet again in the next lesson and I'll tell you more about myself. See you later...

UNIT 2. Text 2: MY USUAL WORKING DAY

Hi again... As you already know, I am a first-year student of the Technical Academy. My parents live in Sochi and I study in Rostov-on-Don so I need some housing. There are two opportunities for me: I can live in a dormitory (a student’s hostel), orrent a flat (an apartment).

I decided to rent a flat. To make the rent smaller, I also decided toshare my flat with two other guys — Yura Gagarin and Vitya Lavrenko. They study at the Academy, too, but they chose other specializations: I study Marine Engineering, Yura studies Space Technologies and Vitya studies Information Technologies. I'll tell you more about them later.

Now, let me describe my usual working day. My classes begin at 8:30. So on week-daysI have to get up at 7:15. I don't have an alarm clock and usually my roommate’smobile phone wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises while Yura is taking a shower and Vitya is still sleeping. I don't take a bath in the morning because I don't have enough time for it. I take a cool shower (that's when Icompletely wake up), brush my teeth. After that I go back to the room andget dressedand brush my hair. Then we have breakfast. Yura makes breakfast every Monday and Thursday, Vitya – every Tuesday and Friday. I have toserve breakfast on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Vitya and I love to listen to the latest news on the radiowhile we are eating and Yuraprefers some energetic music.

We leave the house at ten minutes past eight and walk to the nearest bus-stop. We liverather far from the Academy and it usually takes us about a quarter of an hour to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is fine and we haveenough time we walk to the Academy. It is veryhealthy to walk much.

The classes begin at 8:30 in the morning and they end at 2:00 p.m. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have three or four classes a day. Sometimes it is very hard to wait till they end.

Usually I don'tmiss my classes because I want to pass my exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when I have much other work to do and the classesareboring.

At 11:50 we have lunch. That's my favourite time. That is the time to share the latest news and to gossip. My fellow-students and I prefer not to go to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small cafe not too far from the Academy. At 12:30 we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes.

Occasionally I have to stay at the Academy till 5 or even 6 o'clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write areport. As a rule I have no free time on week-days. So by the end of the week I get verytired.

We come home at about 7 o'clock in the evening. We eat dinner together and share the latest news.

After dinner we wash dishes, drink coffee or tea, and if we have some free time, we play computer games or watch TV. I prefer old comedies, Yura likes science-fiction and detective serials and films, and Vitya doesn’t watch TV at all, he spends all his free time at the computer or in the Internet. Sometimes in the evening I go for a walk or visit some of my friends.

At about midnight I go to bed. I like to read something before going to bed. Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading, and Vitya often sits up very late so it’s he who switches off the light.

UNIT 3. TEXT 3: MY UNIVERSITY

In June I passed my unified state examinations and applied for a place at Northern Arctic Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov. There were a lot of applicants. My exams results were good enough for me to enter the university. So now I'm a first-year student.

The main building of our university is situated in Severnaya Dvina Embankment in Arkhangelsk, just on the bank of the Northern Dvina River. It is supervised by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The University's history goes back to 2010 when it was founded by integration of 2 large rather old universities: pedagogical and technical, for the purpose of the Arctic research. Besides Russian students there are students from other countries. The graduates of the University work all over Russia as well as abroad. Among them there are prominent statesmen and politicians, scientists, engineers, businessmen, interpreters, teachers and journalists. The University is headed by the Rector – Professor Elena Kudryashova who has a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). There are also several Vice Rectors and their assistants.

There are 2 branches of NArFU in Severodvinsk and Koryazhma. There are 18 institutes at the University. Two of them refer to the branch in Severodvinsk; they are Institute of Humanities and Institute of Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering. The institutes are headed by directors, who are aided by assistants. There are also some colleges included into the structure of our university. So I’m a part of the organization great in its size and prominence, the greatest university in this region.

I am a student of Institute of Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering. It is headed by Director Mark Leonidovich Ivlev. The Institute offers full-time and part-time courses. I decided to become a part-time student because in this way it is possible to work and to study at the same time.

There are different Bachelor programs (направления подготовки) in the Institute, such as Shipbuilding, ocean engineering and systems engineering of marine infrastructure facilities, Mechanical engineering, Ground transport and technological systems, Design and engineering support of mechanical engineering industries, Administration in technical systems, Computer science, Technological machines and equipment, Nuclear physics and technologies. Also there are 10 departments in our institute.

I’m going to get a Bachelor’s degree in …………….., and I’m a student of the Department of ...... .

My fellow students and I major in …………. (здесь надо назвать профиль). We study Maths, Perspective Geometry, Engineering Graphics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Technologies, Programming as well as some humanities such as Science of Law, History and English.

Some students in my group are from Severodvinsk, others come from all over the region. The latter are provided with dormitory placement.

Classes begin at 9.00 in the morning and last till three, four or six p.m. In the middle of the day there is a 40 minutes’ break for lunch. I usually have lunch at the university canteen, but some of my fellow-students go to one of the nearby snack-bars or have a hasty bite in a classroom during the break.

There are a lot of facilities in the university. The university library has a rich collection of books on different subjects. There is also a large reading room with a number of PCs. Many laboratories are situated in different buildings. They offer all kinds of material, including access to the World Web. There are also well-equipped laboratories for practice in specialized engineering subjects. What is more, there is a unique system of engineering education – “Plant – University”, when theory is constantly accompanied by practical training at a factory.

The campus in Severodvinsk includes several university buildings which are situated in different places all over the town. There is a dormitory (or hostel, or hall of residence), a gym, as well as parking lots next to some buildings. Our students can do different sports such as volleyball, basketball, floorball, attend classes of aerobics or fitness. I used to play basketball twice a week, but now I often feel pressed for time. There isn't enough time for everything I'd like to do here. But though there is often a lot of homework to do and I often revise for my tests till 1 a.m., I enjoy my studies here.
