TOPIC: TAKING A PILOT ABOARD

 

In some ports taking a pilot aboard is compulsory. Ships must take pilots to manoeuvre (to navigate) the ship into or out of the port. Today the Master contacts the pilot station by radiotelephone.

A pilot boards the ship near the pilot station or in the offing. The pilot approaches the ship on a pilot boat (launch). The pilot ladder must be rigged on port or starboard side to take a pilot aboard. If the wind is strong, the pilot is usually taken aboard from the lee side. In some places the pilot is taken under way.

Usually the watch officer (OOW) meets the pilot and shows him to the bridge. Then the pilot manoeuvres the ship to her berthing place and sees to the mooring of the vessel.
