“He was only wrong by two!”

John was a football trainer at an English college. He always tried to find good football players for his team. John trained his players very well. They were good at running, jumping, swimming, rowing & playing different games. They often took part in races & always won. All Johns’ players were tall strong sportsmen & just nice people. The college team was the best. Regular training, keeping to a diet & a lot of exercises were very important for the sportsmen. They always took the trainer’s advice & showed good results in all competitions & matches. They almost never lost a game or ended matches in a draw. They practically won.

The only trouble with some of his football players was their bad knowledge of many school subjects. The sportsmen were often poor at Mathematics & English. It was not always easy for them to study.

One day the trainer brought a young football player to the Professor of the college. The Professor asked the young player a few questions. He chose very easy questions but the boy couldn’t answer them. At last the Professor asked, “Well, what is five times five?”

The student thought for a long time & then answered, “Twenty six.” The Professor looked at the trainer. “It’s impossible!” he said. “I don’t want to punish your team. I understand he can play football very well but he doesn’t know mathematics at all. He can’t be a student.” But the trainer said seriously, “Oh, please, sir! Let him become a student. He was only wrong by two.”

I’ll try to describe you my typical working day, although every day has its variations. In the morning my alarm clock wakes me up at half-past five. As I am not an early riser I hate getting up at the dawn. But I have to if I don’t want to be late to college. Every morning I scufflewith the temptationto go on sleeping & to stay from college for at least one day. But alas truancy is punished rather severely. And as I try to avoid various complications I have to drag myself out of my bed. I put on my dressing gown & go to the bathroom to take a shower. Every evening I promise myself to take a cool shower in the morning to obtain two goals – to be healthy & to quickly wake up. But in the morn I always forget about such nonsense. I clean my teeth, comb my hair (do my hair) & make my way to the kitchen. I switch on some music, make coffee or tea, some sandwiches with sausage, cheese or ham. Pleasant music & hot coffee let me in the high spirit & reconcile me with the necessity of early getting up.

My classes start at 8 sharp but we have to be at place at a quarter to 8. So I rush to take a bus. It takes me half an hour to get to college. Sometimes I’m late at college. In this case I console myself with the thought of revenging over those who noticed my being slightly late.

According to the scheduleI have not less than 4 double lessons a day. Some days even more. As far as I am always ready with all my home assignments, I am almost constantly in a good mood. If I need some book for my studies, our library is at our disposal. It is rather well stocked with all necessary books. After the second double lessons we have a rather long break for lunch. It lasts 40 minutes.

After classes I have some extracurricular activities either at college or out. I return home & have my supper. Sometimes I take a short nap & then start doing my home assignments.
