Dear Peter,
I’m writing this e-mail message to you from Saint Petersburg. You remember I told you I wanted to work in advertising. Now I'm a University student! In May and June I took the Unified State Exams. I passed all the exams well enough though they were rather difficult. Then I applied to St. Petersburg State University. There were a lot of applicants but I was admitted to the university as a first-year student. I still don't believe it.
Our University was founded in 1724. Here there are many students from other countries. There are twenty five students in my group. Some students live in Saint Petersburg and others come from all over the world. Many students in my group come from Saint Petersburg. One boy is from Rostov-on-Don. There is a girl from the Ukraine and a boy from India. I have already got acquainted with many of my fellow students.
Our classes begin at 8:20 o'clock in the morning. After two classes there is a forty five minutes break for lunch. I usually have lunch at the University canteen, but some of my fellow-students go to one of the several buffets.
After classes I often go to the library or to the multimedia laboratory. The University library has a big collection of books on different subjects. There are also two large reading rooms with a number of PCs. The language laboratory is situated on the second floor. It offers teaching programs for students learning English, French, and German. Each computer has an access to the World Web.
The University has a large campus. There are three hostels for students, a sports centre with a swimming pool and a football stadium, a Palace of Culture. Our students can go in for different sports. I play basketball twice a week and go swimming. But I don’t have enough time for everything because there is a lot of homework to do every day. Nevertheless, I like my studies here.
I'm going to mail you another message tomorrow. Mail me as soon as possible. I'm looking forward to it.

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as the «Window on the West». Thousands of workmen were brought from all parts of Russia to build a new city at the mouth of the Neva River. Buildings were constructed of gray and rose-colored granite. In 1712 Saint Petersburg became the capital.
When the First World War began in 1914,the German-sounding name, St. Petersburg, was changed to Petrograd. After the October Revolution the city was renamed after Lenin, but the capital of the country was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Now St. Petersburg is an important industrial, cultural and educational centre. It is also a large transport center. The first railroad line connected Saint Petersburg with Tsarskoye Selo. Then the famous Nicholas Railroad line from Saint Petersburg to Moscow was constructed. Now there are five railroad stations, two airports, a seaport, two bus terminals, a sea passenger terminal, and a river passenger terminal. The population of the city is over 5 million.
St. Petersburg is indeed a wonderful city. The Winter Palace, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Peter-and-Paul Fortress, the Admiralty building attract thousands of tourists from every corner of the world. Petersburg's museums house some of the world's most famous art collections. The Hermitage, for example, contains the richest collection of pictures in the world.
The city is called the Northern Venice because there are 65 rivers, arms and canals there with artistically decorated bridges. Eight bridges across the Neva River open every night in summer giving together with the unset sun and magnificent buildings a picturesque view. The longest bridge is Alexander Nevsky Bridge across the Neva River. The city is also famous for its beautiful white nights. Different festivals take place at this time. It has also been a tradition for graduates of all kinds to celebrate their graduation and make marry in the night city.

Far Eastern State Transport University (FESTU) was originally founded as Khabarovsk Institute of Railway Engineers (KhabIIZhT) on September 8th, 1937.
