"Training Teachers to Help Young Learners to Successfully Communicate and Collaborate Across Borders and Cultures in Russia”

An intensive series of 2-day workshops and presentations will be held in Moscow (Moscow City Pedagogical University/MELTA, June 20-22), St. Petersburg (SPELTA June 23-24), Yekaterinburg (URALs/ELTA Association June 27-28) and in Vladivostok June (June 30- July 1st).

DR. JOAN KANG SHIN

 

Dr. Joan Kang Shin is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and specializes in the professional development of teachers of English to young learners. Dr. Shin is a series editor for a groundbreaking 6-level primary English series for National Geographic Learning called Our World, which won the 2014 HRH Duke of Edinburgh English Language Book Awards for Winner of Best Entry for Learners. She is also a series editor and author of the new 3-level preprimary series Welcome to Our World as well as the host of a professional development video series that she designed for Our World. Her book Teaching Young Learners English, co-authored with Jodi Crandall, received the prestigious 2013 Ben Warren International House Trust Prize. In 2016, she was honored by TESOL International Association as one of the “30 Up and Coming” leaders in the field of TESOL.

 

Preference for invitees to these workshops (30 participants in each workshop) will be given to those who work with young learners and teenagers and have a clearly articulated rationale. Limited support for travel will be available.

 

The format of the training will include presentations, and practical workshops. Three ninety minute sessions over a period of two days will cover a variety of themes and issues related to this topic and will empower teachers to help young learners and teenagers enjoy and appreciate the diversity of traditions of different peoples through songs, games, projects and to broaden their knowledge of the world.
