Now we are all here!” said Gandalf, looking at the row of thirteen hoods — the best detachable party hoods and his own hat hanging on the pegs. “Quite a merry gathering!

I hope there is something left for the late-comers to eat and drink! What’s that? Tea! No thank you! A little red wine, I think, for me.”

And for me,” said Thorin. “And raspberry jam and apple-tart,” said Bifur. “And mince-pies and cheese,” said Bofur. “And pork-pie and salad,” said Bombur. “And more cakes and ale and coffee, if you don’t mind,” called the other dwarves through the door.

“Put on a few eggs (и добавьте еще несколько яиц), there’s a good fellow (будьте уж так добры: «хорошим человеком»)!” Gandalf called after him (Гэндальф сказал ему вслед), as the hobbit stumped off to the pantries (когда хоббит поковылял к кладовым). “And just bring out the cold chicken and pickles (да и принесли бы холодной курицы и пикулей)!”

“Seems to know (кажется, что знает) as much about the inside of my larders (также много о запасах в моих кладовых; inside внутреннее пространство, внутренности) as I do myself (сколько я и сам знаю)!” thought Mr. Baggins (думал мистер Бэггинс), who was feeling positively flummoxed (который чувствовал себя определенно сбитым с толку), and was beginning to wonder (и начинал размышлять) whether a most wretched adventure (уж не самое ли ужасное приключение; wretched несчастный, жалкий, отвратительный)had not come right into his house (вошло прямо к нему в дом). By the time (к тому самому времени) he had got all the bottles (когда он все бутылки) and dishes (и блюда) and knives (и ножи) and forks (и вилки) and glasses (и стаканы) and plates (и тарелки) and spoons (и ложки) and things (и еду и питье; thing вещь, предмет) piled up on big trays (нагромоздил на больших подносах), he was getting very hot (он становился все более разгоряченным; hot горячий, жаркий), and red in the face (раскрасневшимся: «красным лицом»), and annoyed (и раздраженным).

“Confusticate and bebother these dwarves (черт бы побрал этих гномов, чтоб им всем; confusticate псевдо-латинское = to confuse, to confound, to perplexсмущать, запутывать, проклинать; bebother = bring trouble upon навлечь беду на кого-либо)!” he said aloud (сказал он вслух). “Why don’t they come (почему бы им не прийти) and lend a hand (и не помочь мне; to lend давать взаймы, отдавать; hand рука, сторона)?”

Lo and behold (и вдруг, смотри-ка)! there stood Balin and Dwalin at the door of the kitchen (уже стояли Балин и Двалин у двери кухни), and Fili and Kili behind them (и Фили и Кили за ними), and before he could say knife (и не успел он оглянуться: «и прежде, чем он смог сказать "нож"») they had whisked the trays (они быстро уносили подносы) and a couple of small tables into the parlour (и пару маленьких столиков в небольшую гостиную) and set out everything afresh (и разложили все заново /на столах/).

Gandalf sat at the head of the party (Гэндальф сел во главе стола: «компании») with the thirteen dwarves all round (с тринадцатью гномами вокруг): and Bilbo sat on a stool at the fireside (и Бильбо сел на скамеечку у камина), nibbling at a biscuit (покусывая без аппетита сухое печенье) (his appetite was quite taken away (его аппетит совершенно пропал); to take away убирать, уносить), and trying to look (и пытался выглядеть так) as if this was all perfectly ordinary (как будто если бы все было совершенно обыкновенно) and not in the least an adventure (и ни в малейшей мере не напоминало приключение). The dwarves ate and ate (гномы все ели и ели), and talked and talked (и разговаривали иразговаривали), and time got on (и время шло). At last they pushed their chairs back (наконец, они оттолкнули назад свои стулья), and Bilbo made a move (и Бильбо дернулся: «сделал движение») to collect the plates and glasses (чтобы собрать тарелки и стаканы).

“I suppose you will all stay to supper (я полагаю, что вы все останетесь поужинать)?” he said in his politest unpressing tones (сказал он своим наивежливейшим, ненастойчивым тоном).

“Of course (конечно)!” said Thorin. “And after (и после /ужина останемся/). We shan’t get through the business (мы не покончим с этим делом) till late (допоздна), and we must have some music first (и надо бы нам сперва послушать музыку). Now to clear up (а теперь, приведем-ка все в порядок)!” Thereupon the twelve dwarves (вслед за этим все двенадцать гномов) — not Thorin, he was too important (без Торина, он был слишком важен), and stayed talking to Gandalf (и остался разговаривать с Гэндальфом) — jumped to their feet (вскочили на /свои/ ноги) and made tall piles of all the things (и сложили всю посуду: «все вещи» в высокие кучи: «сделали высокие кучи из всех вещей»). Off they went (и они пошли из /гостиной/), not waiting for trays (не дожидаясь подносов), balancing columns of plates (балансируя стопками тарелок; column колонная, столбик), each with a bottle on the top (на каждой из которых /стопок/ было сверху по бутылке), with one hand (одной рукой), while the hobbit (в то время как хоббит) ran after them (бежал за ними) almost squeaking with fright (почти что повизгивая от испуга): “please be careful (пожалуйста, будьте осторожны)!” and (и) “please, don’t trouble (пожалуйста, не утруждайтесь)! I can manage (я могу справиться и сам).”

I can manage.”

But the dwarves only started to sing (но гномы только начали петь): Chip the glasses (бейте стаканы; to chip стругать, отбивать края) and crack the plates (и разбивайте тарелки; to crack щелкать, расщеплять)!

Blunt the knives (затупляйте ножи) and bend the forks (и гните вилки)! That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates (вот что ненавидит Бильбо Бэггинс) — Smash the bottles (разбивайте вдребезги бутылки) and burn the corks (и жгите пробки)!

Cut the cloth (режьте скатерти) and tread on the fat (и топчитесь на жиру, ступайте на жир)!

Pour the milk (разлейте молоко) on the pantry floor (на полу в кладовке)! Leave the bones (оставьте кости) on the bedroom mat (на коврике в спальной)!

Splash the wine on every door (плесните вином на каждую дверь)! Dump the crocks (свалите в кучу пробки от бутылок) in a boiling bowl (в кипящий котел);

Pound them up (разбейте на мелкие их кусочки) with a thumping pole (колотушкой; pole столб, жердь; to thump бить, наносить тяжелый удар);

And when you’ve finished (и когда вы закончите), if any are whole (и если что-то осталось целым),

Send them down the hall to roll (спустите это вниз по холму, чтобы покатилось)!

That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates (вот что ненавидит Бильбо Бэггинс)! So, carefully (итак, осторожнее)! carefully with the plates (осторожнее с тарелками)!”

And of course (и конечно же) they did none of these dreadful things (они не сделали ни одного из этих ужасных действий), and everything was cleaned (и все было вычищено) and put away safe (и убрано благополучно; safe безопасный) as quick as lightning (с быстротой молнии: «так быстро, как молния»), while the hobbit was turning round and round (в то время как хоббит все поворачивался и поворачивался вокруг) in the middle of the kitchen (/стоя/ в середине кухни) trying to see what they were doing (пытаясь углядеть, что жеэто они делали). Then they went back (затем они отправились назад /в гостиную/), and found Thorin (и обнаружили Торина) with his feet on the fender (/сидящего у камина/, положив ноги на каминную решетку) smoking a pipe (и курящего трубку). He was blowing the most enormous smoke-rings (он выдыхал совершенно огромные кольца табачного дыма), and wherever he told one to go (и куда бы он не приказал кольцу двигаться), it went (оно туда и двигалось) — up the chimney (вверх по дымоходу), or behind the clock on the mantelpiece (или за часы на каминной полке), or under the table (или под стол), or round and round the ceiling (или все вокруг и вокруг потолка); but wherever it went (но куда бы оно ни двигалось) it was not quick enough (оно было не достаточно проворным) to escape Gandalf (чтобы избегнуть /колец/ Гэндальфа). Pop (пуф)! he sent a smaller smoke-ring (и он посылал меньшее колечко дыма) from his short clay-pipe (из своей короткой глиняной трубки) straight through each one of Thorin’s (прямо сквозь каждое кольцо,выпущенное Торином). The Gandalf’s smoke-ring would go green (затем дымное колечко Гэндальфа бледнело: «зеленело») and come back (и возвращалось назад) to hover over the wizard’s head (чтобы парить над головой волшебника). He had quite a cloud of them about him already (у него было уже их целое облачко вокруг него), and in the dim light (и в тусклом свете) it made him look strange and sorcerous (они придавали ему вид странный и колдовской). Bilbo stood still (Бильбо стоял, не двигаясь) and watched (и наблюдал) — he loved smoke-rings (он очень любил колечки дыма) — and then be blushed to think (и тогда он покраснел, подумав) how proud he had been yesterday morning (как он гордился вчера утром) of the smoke-rings (теми колечками табачного дыма) he had sent up the wind over The Hill (которые он пускал по ветру, за Холм).

“Now for some music (а теперь, давайте музыку)!” said Thorin. “Bring out the instruments (вытаскивайте инструменты)!”

And of course they did none of these dreadful things, and everything was cleaned and put away safe as quick as lightning, while the hobbit was turning round and round in the middle of the kitchen trying to see what they were doing. Then they went back, and found Thorin with his feet on the fender smoking a pipe. He had quite a cloud of them about him already, and in the dim light it made him look strange and sorcerous. Bilbo stood still and watched — he loved smoke-rings — and then he blushed to think how proud he had been yesterday morning of the smoke-rings he had sent up the wind over The Hill.

“Now for some music!” said Thorin. “Bring out the instruments!”

Kili and Fili rushed for their bags (Кили и Фили побежали за своими сумками) and brought back little fiddles (и принесли /назад/ маленькие скрипочки); Dori, Nori, and Ori brought out flutes (Дори, Нори и Ори достали флейты) from somewhere inside their coats (откуда-то из-за пазухи: «из внутренностей своих пальто»); Bombur produced a drum from the hall (Бомбур принес из холла барабан; to produce предъявлять, создавать); Bifur and Bofur went out too (Бифур и Бофур тоже вышли), and came back with clarinets (и вернулись с кларнетами) that they had left among the walking-sticks (которые они до этого оставили среди тростей). Dwalin and Balin said: “Excuse me, I left mine in the porch (извините, я оставил свой /инструмент/ у крыльца)!”

“Just bring mine in with you (принесите и мой тоже с собой),” said Thorin. They came back (они вернулись) with viols as big as themselves (с виолами,такими же большими, как и они сами), and with Thorin’s harp (и с арфой Торина) wrapped in a green cloth (завернутую в зеленое сукно). It was a beautiful golden harp (это была прекрасная золотистая арфа), and when Thorin struck it (и когда Торин ударил по ее /струнам/) the music began all at once (музыка зазвучала: «началась» внезапно), so sudden and sweet (такая неожиданная и сладкая) that Bilbo forgot everything else (что Бильбо забыл обо всем другом), and was swept away (и его унесло: «был унесен»; to sweep мести, сметать) into dark lands under strange moons (в неизведанные земли под странными лунами; dark темный; неясный), far over The Water (далеко по ту сторону Воды) and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill (и очень уж далеко от его хоббитовской норы под Холмом).

Kili and Fili rushed for their bags and brought back little fiddles; Dori, Nori, and Ori brought out flutes from somewhere inside their coats; Bombur produced a drum from the hall; Bifur and Bofur went out too, and came back with clarinets that they had left among the walking-sticks Dwalin and Balin said: “Excuse me, I left mine in the porch!”

Just bring mine in with you,” said Thorin. They came back with viols as big as themselves, and with Thorin’s harp wrapped in a green cloth. It was a beautiful golden harp, and when Thorin struck it the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else, and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over The Water and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill.

The dark came into the room (темнота проникла в комнату) from the little window (сквозь маленькое окошко) that opened in the side of The Hill (которое открывалось на склоне: «стороне» Холма); the firelight flickered (огонь в камине вспыхивал и гас) — it was April (стоял: «был» апрель) — and still they played on (и они все еще продолжали играть), while the shadow of Gandalf’s beard (в то время, как тень от бороды Гэндальфа) wagged against the wall (раскачивалась на стене; against против, напротив). The dark filled all theroom (темнота заполнила всю комнату), and the fire died down (и огонь потух; to die умирать; to die down утихать), and the shadows were lost (и тени исчезли; to lose (lost) терять), and still they played on (и они все еще продолжали играть). And suddenly first one and then another (и внезапно, сначала один, а затем другой) began to sing (начали петь) as they played (пока они играли), deep-throated singing of the dwarves (глубоким горловым пением гномов) in the deep places of their ancient homes (/которым они поют/ в глуши: «расположенных в глубине местах» своих древних обиталищ); and this is like a fragment of their song (и это похоже на фрагмент их песни), if it can be like their song (если он может быть похож на их песню) without their music (без их музыки).

The dark came into the room from the little window that opened in the side of The Hill; the firelight flickered — it was April — and still they played on, while the shadow of Gandalf’s beard wagged against the wall. The dark filled all the room, and the fire died down, and the shadows were lost, and still they played on. And suddenly first one and then another began to sing as they played, deep-throated singing of the dwarves in the deep places of their ancient homes; and this is like a fragment of their song, if it can be like their song without their music.

Far over the misty mountains cold (далеко, через мглистые, холодные горы) To dungeons deep and caverns old (к глубоким темницам и старым пещерам) We must away ere break of day (мы должны, отправиться до рассвета; breakпролом, прорыв, первое появление)

To seek the pale enchanted gold (чтобы искать тусклое заколдованное золото).

The dwarves of yore (гномы, что были давным-давно; yore былое) made mighty spells (навели могущественные чары),

While hammers fell (пока молоты падали) like ringing bells (как звенящие колокола)

In places deep (в глубоких местах), where dark things sleep (где спят загадочные: «темные» вещи),

In hollow halls (в пещерах: «полых залах») beneath the fells (под холмами/горами).

For ancient king and elvish lord (для древнего короля и повелителя эльфов) There many a gleaming golden hoard (там много сверкающих золотых запасов = сокровищ)

They shaped and wrought (они обрабатывали и создавали; to shape придавать форму; to work (wrought уст. прош. вр.) делать, выполнять, совершать), and light they caught (и свет они улавливали)

To hide in gems on hilt of sword (чтобы прятать /его/ в драгоценные камни на рукоятке меча).

On silver necklaces they strung (на серебряные ожерелья они нанизывали; to string)

The flowering stars (цветущие/расцветающие звезды), on crowns they hung (на короны они подвешивали; to hang)

The dragon-fire (огонь дракона), in twisted wire (в крученую проволоку) They meshed the light of moon and sun (они улавливали /как в сети/ свет луны и солнца).

Far over the misty mountains cold (далеко, через мглистые, холодные горы) To dungeons deep and caverns old (к глубоким темницам и старым пещерам) We must away ere break of day (мы должны, отправиться до рассвета) To claim our long-forgotten gold (чтобы потребовать наше давно забытое золото).

Goblets they carved there for themselves (кубки они вырезали там для себя) And harps of gold; where no man delves (и арфы из золота, где никто не роет) There lay they long, and many a song (там они лежали долго, и многие песни) Was sung unheard by man or elves (были спеты, неслышимые ни человеком, ни эльфами).

The pines were roaring on the height (сосны шумели на высоте/вершине), The winds were moaning in the night (ветра стонали в ночи). The fire was red, it flaming spread (огонь был красен, он распространял пламя);

The trees like torches blazed with light (деревья, как факелы, сверкали светом).

The bells were ringing in the dale (колокола звонили в долу) And men looked up with faces pale (и люди смотрели вверх с бледными лицами);

Then dragon’s ire more fierce than fire (затем ярость дракона, более свирепая, чем огонь)

Laid low their towers and houses frail (разрушила: «положила вниз» их башни и хрупкие дома).

The mountains smoked beneath the moon (горы дымились под луной); The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom (гномы, они слышали поступь судьбы).

They fled their hall to dying fall (они бежали из своего зала к умирающему падению = к гибели)

Beneath his feet, beneath the moon (под его /дракона/ ногами, под луной). Far over the misty mountains grim (далеко, через мглистые, мрачные горы) To dungeons deep and caverns dim (к глубоким темницам и сумрачным пещерам)

We must away ere break of day (мы должны, отправиться до рассвета), To win our harps and gold from him (чтобы отвоевать наши арфы и золото у него)!
