Innivation – is not simply a new idea, device, or method. It must be accepted in production and provide the rise of quality or efficiency of some procecces or goods. I’d like to tell you about carbon fiber reinforced polymer which is an extremely strong and light material. It contains carbon fibers, which about 5–10 micrometres in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. The binding polymer is often a thermoset resin. It can be expensive to produce this material but properties of carbon fibers, such as high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion make is commonly used wherever high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity are required.

For the first time carbon was used in NASA program for making а space craft. In 1967 it entered a market in England. But nowdays it became widely used in different fields: in aerospace engineering for making wing spars and fuselage components, in automotive engineering, especially for making details of race-cars, in civil engineering, sports goods (masts of sport boats, for ex.), musical instruments and an increasing number of other consumer and technical applications.

 

Research and discoveries in Russia

 

Perhaps, the last major geographical discovery in the world belong to Russian scientists. The discovery of the subglacial Lake Vostok in Antarctica. In 1996, together with British colleagues, they opened it with a seismic sensing and radar observations.

Drilling of borehole at Vostok station allowed Russian scientists to obtain unique data about the Earth's climate over the past half a million years. They determined how the temperature and the concentration of CO2 had been changing in the distant past.

In 2012, the Russian polar explorers were the first who penetrated the relic lake that had been isolated from the outside world about a million years. Water samples examination may lead to discovery of unique organisms and allow to draw conclusions about the possibility of existence of life beyond Earth.

 

Prospects of work in my professional field

 

I'm studying at Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University at department of Turbines, hydraulic machines and aviation engines. My educational program is “Steam and gas turbines”. Specialists in this field can get a job in a big variety of organizations: power and heating plants, gas transmission service, airports, design offices.

I am going to connect my future career with design of gas-turbine engines. This summer I defend master thesis on topic “Design of gas-turbine engine for small-sized aircraft”. After graduating the university I will be employed by "Klimov" - a leading developer of gas turbine engines, known all over the world. I signed a contract with this company for two year. So I will get my firs work experience in a good company.

 

 

University

Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University was founded in the beginning of XXth century because highly qualified specialists were demanded in industry. Until now university manages to this challenge.

My educational program is “Steam and gas turbines” at department of Turbines, hydraulic machines and aviation engines. Gas turbine are used in transportation (aircrafts, naval ships, gas turbine locomotives, lorries, tanks), electricity and heat generation, chemical industry, gas transportation, rocket engineering (pump-drive assembly), supercharging of internal combustion engine. Specialists in this field can get a job in a big variety of organizations: design offices, power and heating plants, gas transmission services, airports.

My master thesis will be connected with design of gas-turbine engine for small-sized aircraft. Such aircrafts are widely used for photography and video recording, inspection of ecological situation, fire safety, condition of pipelines.

My friend from the University also study different practically important subjects: radiophysics, nanotechnologies, metallurgic engineering, nuclear science, electrical engineering and electronics. I suppose, they will be able to find a job in their fields.
