Rules for compiling the bibliographic description

The bibliographic description is made to the literature and reference lists. The bibliographic description is a set of bibliographic information about the document, its part or group of documents presented by certain rules and is sufficient for the overall characterization and identification of the issues.

The structure of the bibliographic description includes the following areas:

• Area of title and statement of responsibility;

• Publishing area;

• Specific information zone;

• Output data area;

• Physical characteristics area;

• Series zone;

• Notes area;

• Standard number (or its alternative) and terms area.

At the end of the bibliographic description, a point is set. At the beginning of each bibliographic description area (except the first one) a conventional punctuation mark — "point-and-dash" (. — ) is placed with spaces on both sides of the dash. Exceptions are signs of "parentheses" and "brackets", which persist after the zone mark.

The area of title and statement of responsibility has the following structure:

Description title. Main title [General material designation]: information regarding the name / first statement of responsibility; the following statements of responsibility.

Description title is an element of the bibliographic record, which contains the name of the main author or the organization name, or the document type, as well as other information.

Main title of the document is a word, phrase, or group of words, phrases, which calls a specific document or documents that are part of it. The main title is put in the form, in which it is presented in the original source of information, in the same sequence and with the same characters.

General material designation determines the class of the material, to which the described object belongs. The following are examples of the general material designation:

• videorecording;

• graphic;

• kit;

• motion picture;

• multimedia;

• object;

• manuscript;

• text;

• electronic resource.

Typically, text as a general material designation is placed only when this source has similar publications used in a different form, such as an electronic resource or manuscript.

Information regarding the name contains the information that reveals and explains the main title, including another name, information on kind, genre, a purpose of the document, indicating that the document is a translation from another language, and the like. The information is put in the form and consistency which is given in the document. Prior information regarding the name, a colon (:) is placed.

Statement of responsibility includes information on individuals and (or) organizations that participated in the creation of the intellectual, artistic or other content of the document. It is the author’s names — the names of persons who have created a real work or take part in its creation. It may also be the name of the organization on whose behalf the document is published. Information on responsibility is recorded in a form, in which it appears in the document.

Publishing area has the structure:

— Information on the edition / first statement of responsibility relating to the edition, the publication of additional information. — Specific information about the document.

Edition statement is recorded in the form in which it is listed in the document.

Publisher’s imprint area contains the information about the place and time of publication, distribution or manufacturing of the object under bibliographic description, as well as information about its publisher, distributor, manufacturer. It has the following structure:

— First place of publication: Name of publisher or distributor, date of publication. — Specific material designation and its volume or page range.

If there are several places of publications, they are indicated as in the examples:

— М .; Киев; Париж: — Москва. [И др.]: — London [etc.]:

If the publication place is not specified, it must be marked as the place of the publisher location. If the publication place is absent or unknown, then the name of the country or the abbreviation "no place" is placed ( — [N. p.]. — [Б. м.]).

The name of the publisher, distributor, etc. is given after the place of publication, to which it refers, and is separated by a colon. This data is brought into the form as specified herein. The title is not surrounded by quotation marks. For example, instead of: «Наукова думка», Наук. думка. is put.

If the document name (title) of the publisher is absent, then the reduction if "without a publisher" is given in parentheses: in Ukrainian [б. в.], in Russian [б. и.] or in Latin [s. n], for example,

. — Ужгород: [б. и.]

The year of publication is put as a publication date. The year is represented in Arabic numerals, preceded by a comma, for example, , 2016.

The information about the amount of paper indicates the total number of pages (sheets) of the document, including individual sheets of illustrations, addendums.

Information about the number of pages is given by those numbers (Roman or Arabic), which are used in the description. The number of sheets or pages, that are not included in the numbering, are written in Arabic numerals in square brackets at the end. The examples, indicating the volume or range of pages, are:

. — 174, [2] c., [6] л. ил.

. — С. 12-34.

The specific data area is used in the description of the objects, which are a special type of publication or placed on specific carriers. For example, for the source of the Internet:

— Режим доступа: http://kanyevsky.kpi.ua/Studentam/obrsiglab1ukr.pdf

— Available at: http://kanyevsky.kpi.ua/Studentam/labexercise%201.pdf

For the Internet source, the conditions of access should also be added, if necessary, under which it can be recreated, such as the type and operating mode of the browser, the type of operating system. It is also desirable to add the last run-time access to confirm the reliability of the source. If the source is a web page, you need to specify how the source of the name is derived, for example:

– Загол. с титул. экрана.

The series area contains information about the document, which consists of more than one part when the object of the bibliographic description is a separate issue of it. The area contains elements of the name area and statement of responsibility relating to the series, as well as the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), and the number, under which the object is indicated in this series.

Notes area contains additional information that is relevant to the description of the individual zones or to the whole documen, but was not specified.

The standard number area contains an international standard number assigned to the object of the bibliographic description: International Standard Book Number (ISBN), International Standard Number of serial publications (ISSN), or state registration number, for example:

. — ISSN 1678-2356

. — ISBN 5-7035-0364-7

. — № держ. реєстрації 05678901

In the bibliographic description the permissible reductions in the words are desired in all parts, except for the main title, for example, вестн., ун-тет, изд., сб., науч. Such reductions are given in the relevant standards.
