STRONG FORMS OF MODAL VERBS

I. Modal verbs are used in their strong form in:

1) general questions: e.g. / ˈkæn juֹ ,du׃ ɪt‖/

2) alternative questions: e.g. / ˈmʌst aɪ spi׃k ,ɪŋglɪʃ ≀ ɔֹ ˈmeɪ aɪ spi׃k ֻrʌʃn‖/

3) short answers: e.g. / ֻ j e s∣ aɪ ֻkæn ‖/

4) contacted forms: e.g. /ֻ mʌstnt, ֻkɑ׃nt, ֻ ni׃dnt ‖/

 

 

ІІ. WORDS ALWAYS STRONG IN UNSTRESSED POSITION

To be (is, are) /ɪz, ɑ׃ / when they function as

To do (do, does) /d u׃, dʌz/ main verbs

To have (have, has, had) / hæv, hæz, hæd/

 

When, then (adverbs) /wen, ðen/

On, off, in /ɒn, ɒf, ɪn/

Will (modal verb) /wɪl/

That (demonstr pr.) / ðæt/ stressed when a subject (e.g.ˈThis is a ֻ pencil.)

or object (e.g. 'Take ֻthese.)

unstressed being an attribute (e.g. This

ˈpencil is ֻblack)

Some /sʌm/ in the final position (e.g. 'Take ֻsome.)

/səm/ as a part of whole (e.g. 'Give me some ֻ paper.)

 

Any “будь-який” /æni/

“якась кількість” /əni/
