Lesson I. Small Talk.

Before talking about the details of business, there is usually a period of social conversation ( small talk) which can be difficult.. A good tactic is to ask questions. There are threemain reasons forthis: peoplelike talking about themelves; it is either for the other person to listen; you may learn something useful ! Here are some sorts of questions:

Are you busy this month? Do you smoke?

Did you come to last year’s Trade Fair? Do you have coffee?

How does your company sell? Where is your hotel?

How big is your company? How good is your Spanish partner?

If the small talk continues toolong, you may want to change the subject too busuness matters. Here are some ways of doing it: If you know a person well: Let’s get down to business;

Let’ get started:

When you don’tknow your partner well enough: Perhaps we could talk about the subject of our meeting/ the reason…

- Mr. Jones. How do you do. I’m Jane Claydon, Personell Manager . Welcome to IBC.

- Thank you.

- Did you have a good journey?

- Yes, thank you. It was along flight though, but I like travelling by plane. So I managed to have a short sleep on board.

- Are you satisfied with you stay at the hotel?

- Yes, it’s rather comfortable and is well positioned, just near the city cetre.

- Nice to hear that. Would you like acupof tea or cofee before we start?

- It’s very kind of you. I was busy in the morning and had no chance to have my breakfast. So I wouldn’t mind a cup of black coffee.

- That’s fine.Your coffee will be ready in someminutes. Is it your first visit to the USA?

- Yes, it is.

- I hopeyou’enjoy your stay here.

- So do I.

What sort of a company is it?

There are many types of business organizations , and the different terms can be confusing. These are short descriptions of each type;

Company ( UK)organization operating to make a profit

Corporation (US)friendly association of people : for example, a

Limited companyfirm where shareholders ‘ liability is limited

Cooperativedemocratic firm owned by its workers

Multinationalorganization operating in several countries
