III. Write a letter to your friend using the following phrases.

Dear John,

Hello! How are you? Thank you for your letter about holidays. I’m glad to know that you’re going to come to Ukraine in winter.

Ukrainian winter is rather mild and warm, although the last winter was an unpleasant exception. It was extremely cold! Sometimes the temperature was lower than 28 degrees Celsius. Moreover, people didn’t know what to wear because of the fact that in the shops there hadn’t been a range of clothes for such a severe weather conditions. However, we survived through that winter and can you believe – I didn’t even sneeze!

Talking about Ukrainian winter festivities I can’t but mention that there’s plenty of them: New Year, Christmas (it is celebrated on January 7th), a lot of days celebrated in the honour of saints (Mary and Joseph, Stepan, Vasyl and others), Vodokhreshcha (it is believed the water becomes holy on that very day and has the healing properties). We also celebrate Valentine ’s Day that has come to our country from abroad but a lot of people, especially those who are in love, like it very much. So, John, as you’ve understood we’ll have the possibility to paint the town red!

I would strongly recommend you to take more warm clothes with you unless you want to catch your death of cold.

Write me soon!

Your friend,

Tanya.
