MY SPECIALITY (OUTSTANDING PEOPLE)

There are a lot of famous names in the history of computer science. They all are worth being named, but the mostly honored should be known to practically every educated person.

As early as in 1642, French mathematician Blaise Pascal built the first of more than 4 dozen copies of an adding and subtracting machine that he invented.

In 1970, French inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard devised a new control system for looms.

Later, the British mathematician and scientist Charles Babbage in collaboration with Augusta Ada Byron used the Jacquard punch-card system in his design for a sophisticated, programmable “Analytical Engine” that contained some of the basic features of today’s computers. It was the first machine to use the binary number system.

The rapid processing of huge amounts of data became possible with an electrical punch-card tabulating machine developed by American inventor Herman Hollerith, whose company in 1924 became International Business Machines (IBM).

Later, professor Howard Aiken together with IBM put into operation the 1st large-scale automatic digital computer, the Mark I- it was 55 feet long and 8 feet high.

One cannot omit the names of Ericsson (the creator of warship monitor), Berry and Atanasoff (developed the 1st rudimentary vacuum-tube calculator), John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert (built the UNIVAC – the 1st commercially available computer), Bill Gates and Paul Allen (the founders of Microsoft company), Steven Jobs and Stephen Wozniak (the founders of Apple Computer), Gordon Moore (Intel cofounder).

At present new and more powerful hard- and software are rapidly developing giving the world new names of researchers and inventors, among them: Andrew Tannenbaum, O’Reilly, James Currows, Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the WWW), Linus Torvalds (free operating system LINUX), Helen Custler (designer of Windows NT) and many others.

MY SPECIALITY (OUTSTANDING PEOPLE)

There are a lot of famous names in the history of computer science. One of the most famous are: Linus Torvalds , Andrew Tanenbaum , Steven Jobs, William Gates.

Linus Benedict Torvalds is a Finnish software engineer best known for having initiated the development of the Linux kernel. He later became the chief architect of the Linux kernel, and now acts as the project's coordinator.

Andrew Stewart Tanenbaum is a professor of computer science at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He is best known as the author of MINIX, a free Unix-like operating system for teaching purposes, and for his computer science textbooks, regarded as standard texts in the field. He regards his teaching job as his most important work.

Steven Paul Jobs is the American co-founder of Apple Inc. In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, created one of the first commercially successful personal computers. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of the mouse-driven graphical user interface.

William Henry "Bill" Gates III is an American business magnate who found the software company Microsoft. Its best selling products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office.

Ukraine has a great scientist in computer tehnologyas well.

Sergii Oleksiyoviych Lebedev was a Soviet/Ukranian scientist in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science, and designer of the first Soviet computers. From 1946 to 1951 he headed the Kiev Electrotechnical Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, working on improving the stability of electrical systems. For this work he received the Stalin prize in 1950.
