UNIT 15

Frozen food

Pre-reading activity

1. Does food go bad quickly in your country?

2. What happens to water when it is very, very cold?

3. How long can you keep fish before it goes bad?

It was not until 1930 that people could keep food fresh for a long time. They did this by freezing it.

Clarence Birdseye was the first person to sell frozen food. He had watched fishermen catching fish in the coldest part of Canada. The fish came out of the water and froze in the cold air. Months later these frozen fish were still fresh, and the fishermen could cook and eat them. Mr. Birdseye started a freezing company with some friends. He put fresh vegetables into large boxes of water. Then he put the boxes in a large freezer. He later sold his part of this business and started another one on his own. He called his new company 'Birds Eye'.

The Birds Eye Company made frozen foods from all kinds of vegetables. It sold the frozen foods in ten different shops in America. At first the frozen foods did not sell very well. Many people did not have anywhere to keep them because they did not have fridges. Also the price was high. However, when more people had fridges, frozen foods became more popular and people did not have to pay so much for them.

By 1933 there were 516 shops selling frozen foods.

Soon after this, The Birds Eye Company started freezing meat, and today there are many companies selling all kinds of frozen foods. Birds Eye, however, is still the name many people think of when they think about frozen foods.
