ПЕРЕВОД МногофункциональныХ служебныХ слов

К лексическим явлениям, представляющим определенные трудности при переводе ввиду их многозначности и омонимич­ности, относятся служебные слова. Наиболее распространены из них следующие:

As

Выступая в предложении в качестве союза, переводится 1) когда, в то время как, по мере того как; 2) так как; 3) как.

После прилагательного (в функции предикативного члена) в инвертированном предложении имеет уступительное значение и переводится хотя, как ни.

As he walked on, he grew more and more tired. – По мере того какон шел, он уставал все больше и больше.

Covered with dust as he was, he didn't want to come in. Он не хотел входить, так какбыл весь в пыли.

Выступая в качестве наречия, as переводится как, как на­пример; в сочетании с прилагательным и наречием – так же... как, такой же... как. Другие сочетания:

as to (for) что касается

as if как если бы, как будто

so as (с тем) чтобы; так (настолько) чтобы

as it is (в начале предложения) как бы то ни было, в действительно­сти, можно сказать

as it is (в конце предложения) уже и так, без того

as it were как бы то ни было

The struggle for peace is as important as the struggle for independence.

В качестве предлога but переводится на русский язык кроме, за исключением.

Сочетание с предлогом but: anything but -- далеко не, все что угодно, только не.

В качестве союза but переводится: 1) но, а, однако, тем не менее; 2) если не, как не, чтобы не.

Сочетание с союзом but: but for– если бы не.

В качестве наречия but переводится только, лишь.

But for you we should not have finished the work in time. – Если бы не вы, мы бы не окончили работу вовремя.

He is but fifteen. Ему только пятнадцать лет.

For

Выступая в предложении в качестве союза, for переводится на русский язык ибо, так как, потому что.

How to guarantee durable peace on our planet? The best way is general and complete disarmament, for it rules out force in the settlement of international issues.

Как обеспечить длительный мир на нашей планете? Лучшим путем для этого является всеобщее и полное paзоружение, ибо оно исключает применение силы в разрешении между народных споров.

It was necessary to introduce a system of rationing, for the short­age of food was high enough.

Необходимо было ввести карточную систему, так как дефи­цит продуктов питания был достаточно большим.

Выступая в качестве предлога, for переводится:


1) за, ради;

2) за, по;

3) для;

4) в течение, на какой-либо срок;

5) из-за, по при­чине, вследствие;

6) на, к;

7) от, против (болезни);

8) за, вместо.


Словосочетания с предлогом for:

for all... несмотря на, при (всем)..., вопреки, чтобы... не...

...for one со своей стороны.

for one thing во-первых, прежде всего

for that matter несмотря на все; и все же; в сущности, фактически; собственно / по правде говоря; если на то пошло; что касается этого, в этом отношении

but for если бы не

Непереводимый предлог после глагола wait:

Who are you waiting for? Кого ты ждешь?

Once

Выступая в предложе­нии в качестве наречия, once переводится один раз, однажды, когда-то, некогда.

Выступая в качестве союза, once переводится как только, коль скоро.

Since

Выступая в предложе­нии в качестве

1) предлог времени (начиная) с, после:

We haven't talked since Monday. Мы не разговаривали с понедельника.

2) наречие времени с тех пор:

I haven't seen her since. – Я не видел ее с тех пор.

3) подчинительный союз с тех пор, как:

He hasn't written since he left. Он не написал с тех пор, как уехал.

4) подчинительный союз так как, поскольку:

Since everything was ready, we didn't want to waste time. – Так как все было готово, мы не хотели терять время.

5) другие случаи

Не at first refused, but has since consented. Он сначала отказался, но потом согласился.

I have been wishing to speak to you ever since you returned. Я хотел поговорить с тобой с момента твоего возвращения.

Примечание

Словосочетания:

since thenс тех пор, стого времени, после этого;

ever since1) с тех (самых) пор (как); 2) со времени;

long sinceдавно уже.

While

Переводится на русский язык:

1) в то время как, пока;

2) хотя, тогда как, несмотря на то что;

3) и, а.

Over 60,000 drivers were on strike yesterday. Men at York and Portsmouth joined the strike, while at Edinburgh there was a return to work. Вчера забастовало более 60 тысяч водителей машин. Рабочие в Йорке и Портсмуте присоединились к забастовщикам, в то время как в Эдинбурге рабочие вновь приступили к работе (вернулись на работу).

While the negotiations have been protracted, there is no evidence that deadlock has been reached. – Хотя переговоры затянулись, нет оснований считать, что они зашли в тупик.

While в сочетании с причастием обычно не переводится.

Примечание

1. Слово wellв сочетании с различными частями речи, сохраняя в основном свое значение, переводится по-разному:

1) well + глагол и well + причастие IIпереводится хорошо, вполне;

The plan, if well designed, will make it possible to save our resources. План, если он хорошо составлен, даст возможность сохранить наши ресурсы.

2) well + модальный глагол переводится вполне, с успехом;

This question may well be discussed at the next sitting. Этот вопрос с успехом может быть обсужден на следующем заседании.

3) well + наречие (союз) переводится значительно, очень, доволь­но; имеются и другие сочетания со словом well.

as well также

as well as так же как, как... так и...

2. Наречия very очень и then тогда в функции прилагательного приобретают другое значение: very (тот) самый; then тогдашний.

Не has very pleasing manners. У него очень приятные манеры.

You are the very man I want to talk to. Вы тот самый человек, с кем я хочу поговорить.

The then Prime Minister acted on advice. – Тогдашний премьер-министр действовал по совету.

There

1)конструкция there is/are переводится как есть, существует, нахо­дится, а перевод предложения с такой конструкцией начинают с об­стоятельства места:

There is some discrepancy in the results obtained. В полученных результатах есть расхождения.

Вместо формы be может стоять глагол exist:

There exist different ways to solve this problem. Существуют разные способы решения этой задачи.

Сочетания: there is no question of... – "не может быть и речи о...".

there is no doubt about it – "в этом нет сомне­ния".

2) местоимение там, туда:

Leave the letter there. Оставь письмо там.

I'll go there myself. Я поеду сам туда.

3) междометия ну вот, вот так, будет тебе и др.:

There you go! – Вот молодец! (Вот так!)

There, there. Stop сrуing! – Будет тебе, хватит плакать!

It

1) личное местоимение (в именительном или косвенном падеже):

I have heard the news and find it very important. Я уже слышал новость и считаю ее очень важной.

2) указательное местоимение:

It's today's newspaper. It's interesting. – Это сегодняшняя газета. Она интересная.

3) местоимение, заменяющее все предшествующее высказывание, пере­водимое как это:

The price rise is inevitable. It means that... Рост цен неизбежен. Это означает, что...

4) формальное подлежащее, которое не переводится, поскольку в рус­ском языке, в отличие от английского, существуют безличные пред­ложения:

It is necessary to think it over. Необходимо это обдумать.

In ancient times it was believed that the Earth was flat. В древности думали (считали), что земля плоская.

It seems that... По-видимому

It is known that... Известно, что

It's common knowledge that… Общеизвестно, что

It was observed that… Было отмечено, что

5) формальное подлежащее в усилительной конструкции It was he ...who с переводом "именно... ":

It was Lomonosov who founded Moscow university. – Именно Ломоносов основал Московский университет.

6) формальное дополнение, которое не переводится.

I find it hard to understand him. Мне трудно его понять.

This method makes it possible to obtain reliable data. Этот метод дает возможность получить достоверные данные.

That

1) указательное местоимение (э)тот, (з)та, (э)то:

Show me that magazine please. Покажите мне, пожалуйста, тот журнал.

That's just what I was going to say. – Это как раз то, что я собирался сказать.

2) формальное подлежащее, которое не переводится'.

That will do. Достаточно. (Хватит.)

That's quite right. Совершенно верно.

3) союз that как подлежащее то, что:

That they have prepaid for the delivery of goods was part of the contract. – To, что они произвели предоплату за доставку товаров, было оговорено в контракте.

4) подчинительный союз что; то, что:

They believe that there will be no problem with payment. Они полагают, что с оплатой проблем не будет.

The advantage of this method is that it has been tested. Преимущество этого метода в том, что он уже проверен.

5) относительное местоимение который (-ая, -ое):

It's a problem that needs to be discussed in detail. Это проблема, которую необходимо подробно обсудить.

6) слово-заместитель (замещает ранее стоящее существительное и пере­водится тем же существительным или опускается при переводе):

The inflation rate in October was higher than that in September. Уровень инфляции в октябре был выше, чем (уровень инфля­ции) в сентябре.

7) союз чтобы (когда он входит в составной союз in order - для того чтобы):

I'll leave the paper with you in order that you (should) read it. Я оставлю тебе статью, чтобы те ее прочитал.

8) часть усилительного оборота (именно):

It was our strong will that helped find the solution to the prob­lem. – Именно наша сильная воля помогла найти решение этой проблемы.

9) местоимение такой (-ая, -ое), так:

It wasn't that bad. Было не так уж плохо.

Which

1) относительное местоимение который:

The speed at which the car was moving was too high. Скорость, с которой двигалась машина, была слишком вы­сокой.

2) относительное местоимение что в функции подлежащего в прида­точном предложении:

The minimum wage will be increased, which will cause the price rise. Минимальная зарплата будет увеличена, что вызовет рост цен.

3) другие случаи:

They were doing research of unemployment, in which case both official and hidden unemployment was studied. Они занимались исследованием безработицы, и в этом слу­чае изучалась как официальная, так и скрытая безработица.

For which reason -и по этой причине;

For which purpose - и для этого;

The manner in which - то, как...

The extent to which - то, насколько...

What

1) вопросительное слово что:

What do you mean? – Что ты имеешь в виду?

2) вопросительное слово какой:

What size do you wear? – Какой размер вы носите?

3) относительное местоимение то, что; что:

We accept what you offer us. Мы принимаем то, что вы нам предлагаете.

They wanted to know what had happened. Они хотели знать, что произошло.

4) относительное местоимение в функции формального подлежащего то, что (часто не переводится):

What he said may have been true. – То, что он сказал, возможно, было правдой.

What happened was that they were late. Случилось так, что они опоздали.

What I mean (What I want to say) is that we must go there any­way. Я имею в виду хочу сказать), что нам нужно туда поехать в любом случае.

5) относительное местоимение в функции определения то, какой:

What technique is to be used should be coordinated with your re­search supervisor. Необходимо согласовать с вашим научным руководителем, какой метод следует использовать.

6) особые случаи:

- замена дословного перевода адекватным:

A price rise is what followed after that. – Вместо "Рост цен - то, что последовало за этим" лучше пе­ревести "За этим последовал рост цен".

— выражения:

What about ...? Как насчет ...?

What does it matter? Какое это имеет значение?

In what follows... В дальнейшем...

What for? Зачем?

Like

1) наречие как, подобно:

Orders and requests are written like any other business letters. Заказы и просьбы оформляются подобно любым другим де­ловым письмам.

2) прилагательное похожий, подобный, схожий:

These substances have like properties. У этих веществ схожие свойства.

3) глагол нравиться:

I like this design. Мне нравится эта конструкция.

Only

1) наречие только:

Only he was able to help us. – Только он мог помочь нам.

2) прилагательное единственный (с артиклем или притяжательным ме­стоимением):

The only thing that could help them was time. – Единственное, что могло им помочь, было время.

His only book was printed after his death. – Его единственная книга вышла после его смерти.

Но: единственный ребенок в семье - an only child.

Only just – почти, как раз

Only too – очень

If only – если бы только

3) противительный союз но:

They were prepared to do it, only they were never asked. Они были готовы это сделать, но их так и не попросили.

Unless

Unless является условно-отрицательным и не имеет временного значения, хотя его часто путают с союзом until.

Unless changed, this law will make life difficult for farmers. – Если закон не изменить, то он сделает жизнь фермеров трудной.

We always have to wait till/until the last customer has left. Мы всегда должны ждать, пока (до тех пор, пока) не уйдет последний покупатель.

По своему предметно-логическому значению unless является синонимом сочетания if…not. Однако между ними все же имеется небольшая смысловая разница – союз unless в некоторых контекстах выражает меньшую вероятность совершения действия, чем сочетание if…not. Поэтому unless употребляется в юридических формулах делового стиля. При этом не следует думать, что он употребляется только в письменной речи. И unless и if…not одинаково употребляются как в устной, так и в письменной речи.

Unless you change your mind, I won’t be able to help you. If you do not change your mind, I won’t be able to help you. – Если вы не измените свою точку зрения, я буду не в состоянии помочь.

Для передачи союза unless при переводе на русский язык можно прибегать к следующим вариантам: если…не, если только…не, разве только. Последние два варианта передают меньшую вероятность совершения действия. Конечно, предложенные варианты не исключают других способов перевода, например, предлог без + существительное, антонимический перевод и т. д.

At the meetings it became clear that unless the union leadership carried out their wishes, the men may form their own organizations. На собраниях стало совершенно ясно, что если руководство союза не выполнит желания рабочих, они, возможно, создадут другую организацию.
