Sport in Russia
Sport and physical culture are an important part of life in our country. Millions of people spend a great deal of their leisure time either participating in or watching sport. Doing sports helps people to remain healthy and makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities. Traditionally, sport can be divided into professional and amateur sport.
Physical education begins as early as in a kindergarten. At school all pupils are required to attend physical education classes, unless, of course, they are sick. In that case, they are usually required to provide an excuse from their doctor. There are often special programmes for young people with physical handicaps. Physical training in schools usually consists of an introduction to basic skills and games. The kinds of games and activities practised in schools depend to some extent on the facilities that are available.
All colleges and universities in Russia have requirements for training in physical education. These may consist of a course that meets once or twice per week. Most colleges and universities in Russia have extensive facilities for physical education and recreation.
Many people go in for sports on their personal initiative. All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sportsgrounds, swimming-pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields. In addition all sorts of fitness and health clubs continue to spring up all over the country. There are some groups and clubs, such as runners and bicyclists, who do not necessarily need special facilities in which to train.
For those who like the thrill and the freedom of floating in air there is also gliding, hang gliding, and sport parachuting. Other popular sports for the individual are surfing and wind surfing. Horseback riding is also available to the public in many places.
Professional sport is also paid much attention to in our country. There are separate schools, institutes and faculties of physical culture. Traditionally, Russian sportsmen are good at hockey, figure skating, cross-country skiing, gymnastics, synchronous swimming, track-and-field athletics and different kinds of single combat and they have set a great number of world records. Our sportsmen participate in European, world competitions, Olympic, Para Olympic Games and win gold, silver and bronze medals. In 1980 Moscow hosted the twenty-second Summer Olympic Games and the twenty-second Winter Olympic Games will be held in 2014 in Sochi.
