Употребление Past Perfect
Past Perfect употребляется:
1. Для выражения действия, которое произошло раньше другого действия в прошлом или завершилось к определенному моменту в прошлом (by 6 o'clock, by that time, by the 1st of September):
We had a fantastic holiday, but we had earned it.
Susan bought the house where her grandparents had once lived.
By 6 o’clock he had finished his work.
By the 20th of June we had passed all the exams.
В отрицательной форме Past Perfect может выражать действие, которое еще не закончилось к определенному моменту в прошлом.
I hadn’t gone a hundred yards from the corner when I noticed there was a car
behind us ( Не прошел я и ста ярдов, как ……).
2. В сочетании с Past Continuous, когда одно из двух прошедших действий находится в процессе совершения, а другое завершилось к началу первого.
Joe had come down into the hall and was waiting for his friend.
The wind had stopped, but it was still raining.
3. В придаточных предложениях времени, вводимых союзами after, when и before может употребляться как Past Perfect, так и Past Simple. Past Simple используется в тех случаях, когда действия происходят последовательно, одно за другим. Past Perfect употребляется тогда, когда говорящий подчеркивает завершенность действия (только после того, как).
She saw him every day after we arrived in New York.
He knew the poem by heart after he had heard it several times.
После союза when в придаточном предложении обычно употребляется Past Simple. Past Perfect используется в тех случаях, когда when приближается по смыслу к after (после того, как).
When he finished speaking, everyone clapped.
When they had gone I decided to look through my papers again.
В сложноподчиненном предложении, в котором придаточное вводится союзом before(прежде,чем; до того, как), Past Perfect употребляется в главном предложении, если необходимо подчеркнуть, что действие главного предложения предшествовало действию придаточного. В тех случаях, когда такой необходимости нет, в обоих предложениях употребляется Past Simple.
I had asked three times for the money before he paid me.
He decided to buy a present for his daughter before he left.
Иногда Past Perfect употребляется после союза before в придаточном предложении. В таких предложениях глагол передает незавершенное действие, а союз before переводится на русский язык при помощи сочетаний еще до того как (он успел), еще прежде чем, и т.п.
I knew the truth before I had been in the house for an hour.
He began apologizing before I had paid the driver.
4. В главном предложении с союзами hardly …. when, scarcely …. when, no sooner …. than(не успел …. как, едва …. как). В придаточном предложении употребляется Past Simple.
He had scarcely finished his work when somebody knocked at the door.
We had hardly settled down in our seats when the lights went out.
В таких предложениях иногда наблюдается обратный порядок слов (инверсия), когда для придания стилистического эффекта вспомогательный глагол hadпредшествует подлежащему.
Hardly had the train left the station when there was an explosion.
Scarcely had we arrived home when the police called.
No sooner had it stopped raining than the sun came out.
Примечание. В повествовании, при изложении последовательных действий, происходивших одно за другим, глаголы, выражающие эти действия, употребляются в Past Simple, несмотря на то, что одни действия совершались ранее других. Если при изложении последовательных действий упоминается другое действие, которое им предшествовало, т.е. произошло раньше событий, являющихся основной темой изложения, то это действие выражается глаголом в Past Perfect.
In October Andrew set out alone to London. Now that the exam was so close at hand, he felt that he knew nothing. Yet, on the following day when he began the written part of the examination, he found himself answering the papers with a blind automatism. He wrote and wrote, never looking at the clock, filling sheet after sheet. He had taken a room at the Museum Hotel. Here it was extremely cheap. But the food was bad. Between the exams he lived in a kind of a daze.
Если при изложении последовательных действий упоминается ряд других действий, которые им предшествовали и которые образуют новую последовательность действий, Past Perfect используется либо для всех действий (a), либо только для первого (b). В подобных случаях строгого правила не существует.
a) Jack chose the hotel. He had never been there before but he had heard his mother speak of it once. She had said she had liked it.
b) It was at Blackstable that I first met Edward. I was fifteen and had just come back from school or the summer holidays. The morning after I got home I took a towel and went down to the beach. Passing the bank, I called in to greet the manager, and when I came out I met my uncle. He stoppedandshookhands with me. He was walking with a stranger. He introducedme to him.
Exercise 7.Put verbs in brackets into either the Past Simple or the Past perfect.
I can’t believe I (get) ………. that apartment. I (submit) ………. my application last week, but I didn’t think I had a chance of actually getting it. When I (show) ………. up to take a look around, there were at least twenty other people who (arrive) ………. before me. Most of them (fill, already) ………. out their applications and were already leaving. The landlord said I could still apply, so I did.
I (try) ………. to fill out the form, but I couldn’t answer half of the questions. They (want) ………. me to include references, but I didn’t want to list my previous landlord because I (have) ………. some problems with him in the past and I knew he wouldn’t recommend me.
