A.

Elizabeth: Look Jake, have you got a family of your own?

Jake: Oh, no, I’m not married yet. I live with my parents.

Elizabeth: Is your family large?

Jake: I don't think so. My parents have got only two daughters.

Elizabeth: And which of you is the eldest?

Jake: It’s me. I’m twenty.

Elizabeth: How old is your younger sister? I wonder what her name is?

Jake: Susan. She’s a lovely girl. She is ten.

Elizabeth: It’s a pleasure to have such a young sister, isn’t it?

Jake: Certainly. She’s the apple of my eye.

B.

Linda: Keith, you’ll never believe what's happened!

Keith: What do you mean?

Linda: Monika and Charles are getting divorced.

Keith: You're kidding! When? What happened?

Linda: Well, I don't really know, but I heard that they've been separated for two months already.

Keith: That’s really surprising – I always thought that they were so suited to each other, such similar personalities… I just can’t believe it – Monika and Charles! The perfect couple… It just shows you how little one knows about what goes on in people’s lives, doesn’t it?

C.

Alice: Granny, How many brothers and sisters did you have?

Granny: I had … now let me see … there was … me, Alice, James, and then Henry – that’s four, isn’t it? Then Robert and Emily, the twins – so that makes two sisters and three brothers.

Alice: What were they all like? Did they look like you?

Granny: Well, some did and some didn’t. My sister Alice and I were very similar. People thought we were the twins, but she was two years older than me. We both had fair hair. People said I was the pretty one – my sister Alice was so moody, she always looked miserable.

Alice: Who were you closest to?

Granny: Ah, my brother Henry. He was such a kind boy, always smiling, and so gentle.

Alice: Who did he look like?

Granny: Well, people said James had my Mother’s features; same nose, same mouth, while Henry was more like Father. Henry had thick, dark hair, he was quite a plump boy, not fat, but he was always well-built, like Father.

Alice: What about the twins?

Granny: They both had long faces with high foreheads. Robert was very severe and serious. Emily was cheerful good-hearted.

A “typical” British family consists of a mother, a father and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in family life. For example, since the law made it easier to get a divorce, the number of divorces has increased. In fact, one marriage in three now ends in divorce. This means that there are a lot of one-parent families.

Members of a family – grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins – keep in touch, but they see less of each other than they used to. This is because people often move away from their home town to work.

Relationships within the family are different now. Parents treat their children more as equals than they used to, and children have more freedom to make their own decisions. But still, the English are a nation of stay-at-homes. “There is no place like home”, they say. And when the man is not working he is at home in the company of his wife and children and busies himself with the affairs of the home. “The Englishman’s home is his castle”, is a saying known all over the world. And it is true.

The family in Britain is changing. In the past, people got married and stayed married. Divorce was very difficult, expensive and took a long time. Today, people’s views on marriage are changing. Many couples, mostly in their twenties or thirties, live together (cohabit) without getting married. Only about 60% of these couples will get married.

In the past, people married before they had children, but now about 40% of children in Britain are born to unmarried (cohabiting) parents. In 2000, about a quarter of unmarried people between the ages of 16 and 59 were cohabiting in Great Britain.

People are getting married at a later age now and many women do not want to have children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a baby until late thirties.

British and American families are small. In faction of both Britain and the USA have nearly stopped growing. In the old days, a “typical” family had a father, a mother and two or three children, with grandparents living near. Most children still live in this kind of family, but in both countries there is a growing number of “single parent families”, with only one parent. Some parents are single because they are divorced, but many other young parents do not get married at all. A typical British family has a car, a colour TV set, a washing machine and a cat or dog as well. They start the day at about 7 o’clock, have breakfast at 8 and are off to work by 8.30. More and more women now go out to work as well as men. Children have lunch at school at about 12.30 and come home at 4 in the afternoon. Their parents are usually at home by 6 o’clock, and the family eats together at 6.30 or 7. In the evenings, father may go to the pub for a drink or stay at home and watch TV with the others. Young children go to bed early, at about 8 o’clock, two or three hours before their parents. A typical American family has more money than a British family. Some have two or three cars, large modern kitchens and more electrical goods. They eat more meat and spend more on clothes. But their daily programme is nearly the same. Like British children, American children eat lunch at school, come home in the mid-afternoon and go to bed earlier than their parents.

24. Прослухайте, прочитайте текст “FAMILY LIFE”, перекладіть його.

Most young people eventually get married, buy or rent a house or a flat of their own and start a family. However, a great number of changes are taking place in this way of behaviour. As in many other Western European countries, more and more men and women are living together without being married. In the mid 1980s more than a quarter of new brides had lived with their husbands before marriage, compared with 8 per cent in 1970. People are also getting married later than they used to. However marriage is still popular even among those whose first marriage has failed. In fact, in 36 per cent of all marriages one or both partners have already been married and divorced. Britain now has the highest divorce rate in Europe and about 10 per cent of children live with only one parent.

Another trend is towards smaller households. Very few children now grow up in large families and more and more adults are living alone (25 per cent in 1987). Many of the people who live alone are elderly; it is unusual to find three generations living in one house as they used to do in the past. It is quite common for close relatives to live in different parts of the country and many people hardly ever meet their uncles, aunts and cousins. One reason for this is that British people move house every five years on average. They do this in order to change jobs or to buy a bigger or better house.
