Ex.3. Speak on the following situations using the words, suggested. Think over what you can add

a) You’re a first- year student. Say what things you can do, cannot do yet ( read English texts, books in the original; recite several English poems, spell the words, handle a tape-recorder, spend much time at the lab listening to different tapes; speak English fluently);

 

b) What must every student remember

( work hard at one’s grammar, make reading and speaking more distinct, be attentive at the lessons, work systematically, attend all the lectures, not to lag behind the group, chat away at the lessons, be aware of the latest changes/developments in the sphere of the language you’re speaking, to work hard to master the language);

 

c) What a student shouldn’t do

( turn down the corners of the book pages, spoil/ break tape-recorders, prompt at the lessons, look up the words in the dictionary during a test, to cheat and use cribs, cry out at the lessons)

 

Ex.4. Make up a short dialogue between a teacher and a student who is late for classes. You may use more alternatives:

( to be sorry, to excuse, my only excuse is that, to be 10 minutes late, to go to the Dean’s office, to get a written permission to be present at the lesson).

 

Ex 5. Ask the teacher if you must:

read the second passage, translate this sentence, switch on the light, turn on the tape-recorder, recite the poem,

retell the story, explain the rule, clean the blackboard, fetch a piece of chalk, wet the duster, get the books from the library.

Ex. 6. What will you say if you want to know:

where you'll have a lecture on General Linguistics, what mark you got for the dictaton, why your friend missed a class in English, what new subjects you will have next term, how many exams you will have in winter, what English books you must read up for your exam, how long your winter holidays will last, how you must pronounce the word "direct", if your friend has already passed her exams, what marks she got, what exam was the most diffi­cult.

Ex. 7. What will the teacher say:

a) if she wants the students

to open their textbooks at page 71, to fetch a piece of chalk, to hand in their testpapers, to do exercise 15 in written form, to learn the poem by heart, to listen to the record, to clean the blackboard, to speak in a loud voice, to make up a dialogue on the topic "Institute Life";

b) if the teacher doesn't want the students

to speak Russian at the lesson, to prompt, to talk, to make noise, to crib, to translate word for word, to use slang words, to retell the story in the first person.

Ex. 9. Translate into English:

 

1. В начале урока учитель делает перекличку, а староста приносит журнал.

2. Дежурного попросили вытереть с доски и принести мел.

3. Во время урока мы стараемся сохранять хорошую дисциплину в классе, поднимаем руки, если хотим ответить на вопросы учителя и никогда не выкрикиваем вне очереди.

4. Отойдите в сторону, дайте другим посмотреть транскрипцию на доске.

5. Она сделала много ошибок в чтении, потому, что не посмотрела слова в словаре и не написала их в транскрипции.

6. Следите за своим произношением, вы делаете одну и ту же ошибку.

7. Повесьте карту на стену, мы будем изучать географическое положение Великобритании. Не забудьте делать заметки о столицах, а потом сдайте ваши тетради.

8. Можно мне продолжать читать? Да, читайте с начала страницы до тех пор пока я вас не остановлю.

9. Откройте ваши учебники на странице 27 и задайте вопросы к тексту.

10. На уроке английского мы обычно читаем в слух и про себя, переводим с русского на английский и учитель часто интересуется, есть ли у кого либо другой вариант перевода.

11. После того как учитель раздал нам проверенные диктанты, мы сделали работу над ошибками и произносили слова по буквам, что бы улучшить свое правописание.

12. Что бы сохранять дисциплину в классе, учитель не должен позволять ученикам выкрикивать, шуметь, пользоваться шпаргалками и подсказывать на уроке.

13. Она говорила бегло, пересказывая текст, и учитель поставил ей пятерку.

14. Принесите, пожалуйста, мел. Мы будем писать слова в транскрипции.
