ODESSA NATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY
Odessa National Medical University was founded in 1990 (September 1) as the Medical Faculty of Novorossiysky (now Odessa) University thanks to the efforts of the great surgeon N.I.Pirogov. The first dean of the Medical Faculty became the prominent scientist V. V. Podvysotsky who was the real creator of the Medical Faculty. At that time only 125 students studied at the Medical Faculty.
In 1920 the Medical Faculty of Novorossiysky University got the status of a Medical Academy and became an independent higher educational institution. D. K. Zabolotny, a great epidemiologist, became the first rector of it. In 1921 Medical Academy became Odessa Medical Institute. In 1994 it received the status of a State University and in September 2010, just before its 110th aniversary it became a National University of Ukraine.
Odessa National Medical University is one of the biggest higher medical universities in Ukraine. It is a member of European and International Association of Universities.
About 6000 students are getting their education at the University nowadays, about 1300 of them are citizens of other countries.
The classes are given in Ukrainian, Russian and English (for foreign students). The teaching personnel of the university includes 800 teachers, 18 academicians, 105 professors and doctors of Medical Science, 407 associate professors of medical science.
There are six departments and 58 subdepartments at the university.
Post-graduate specialization is carried out in internship and in magistracy.
The university has 18 blocks with general area of 20,000 sq.m., 20 hospitals and clinics, 6 hostels, a library with total stock of 1 million books, a publishing-printing complex, a scientific medical computer center and a sports complex.
