Reported Speech

There are two ways of reporting what a person says:

- Direct speech (reports the exact words the speaker says)

“ I have always depended on the kindness of strangers”, Blanche said.

- Indirect speech (does not report the speaker’s exact words)

Blanche said she had always depended on the kindness of strangers.

We change general questions and alternative questions into reported speech with IF:

“Do you know when the film will be released?”

He asked me if I knew when the film would be released.

We change special questions with the help of question words that they start with.

“ What was the name of the film we watched yesterday?”

She asked me what the name of the film we watched the day before had been.
