The data published in this document is based on the best knowledge of the EBAN Secretariat, the contribution and good will of its members, and the collaboration of business angel networks across Europe.

This document can be freely reproduced in order to support the development of the European informal venture capital industry.

EBAN, the European Business Angel Network,was established by the European Associationof Development Agencies (EURADA – www.eurada.org) in collaboration with the European Commission in 1999. EBAN is an independent body, financed by its members. As such, it is free to pursue the best interest of its members with the sole objective of advancing the recognition of the BA and BAN industry in Europe.

The membership of the Association is composed of:

Networks with a national coverage

Regional and local networks

Non-European networks with an interest in the European business angel scene

Other interested entities having a direct involvement in promoting informal investment in Europe.

EBAN’s objectives are to:

Represent the interests of the informal venture capital market and the matching platforms who help entrepreneurs and investors meet across Europe;

Raise awareness about the concept of angel investing and spread good practices revolving around it across Europe;

In general contribute to the improvement of the working environment of business angels and their networks.

AUSTRIA

Background

“i2-die Boerse fьr Business Angels” (i.e. i2-The Business Angel Network) is the first and only Austrian-wide operating BAN. It was founded in 1997 and is part of the AWS, a state-owned specialised bank that supports Austrian Companies.

Since July 2005 a regional business angel network operates in the region of Upper Austria and closely collaborates with i2.

Statistics

i2 is a support programme of the AWS GmbH (i.e. Ltd).

National association

i2 is the only Austria-wide operating BAN and also supports the implementation of regional BANs. The first regional BAN called AICO was founded in 2005 in Upper Austria.

Lobbying

The BAN stays in contact with almost all organisations involved in the process of founding companies and entrepreneurship in general (universities, science parks, lobbying organisations, business plan competitions, etc.).

EU support

Between Sept. 1999 and Sept. 2002 i2 was co-funded by the European Union in order to strengthen its activities.

EBAN members

So far i2 is the only member of the EBAN in Austria.

i2 matches innovative projects or companies with Business Angels and other investors who want to hold a stake in the company and provide their expertise. The BAN screens submitted business plans and presents those which meet the requirements to the Business Angels in a standardized way. All investors and entrepreneurs who participate in the BAN are known in person.

The BAN is open to projects of all sectors/industries and all phases of the companies life-cycle although a focus is set on the start-up-phase.

Additional services like networking events for investors and workshops are offered.
