Brief description of the discipline
The main purpose of discipline is to prepare students for academic study through communicative approach and promote independent learning by encouraging them to become motivated and active language learners. By the end of this level, students can understand main ideas and specific information in short straightforward and texts with high frequency everyday language with a relatively wide vocabulary range.
They can understand personal letters and simple newspaper articles / interview. Students can:
- skim a text to understand the gist
- skim a text to find its main idea
- skim to identify the purpose of the text
- scan texts in order to locate desired information, and gather information from different parts of text, or from different texts
- work out the meaning of words in context
- understand how a text is organized
- use a monolingual and/or bilingual dictionary to understand the meaning of words and extend their vocabulary
- identify specific information in conversation and monologues on current topics and/or topics of personal interest
- understand paraphrased ideas in conversation and monologues on current topics and/or topics of personal interest
- take notes for future reference
- use a variety of strategies to achieve comprehension
- write a formal letter of enquiry at a basic level
- organize a text with connectors
- write texts involving

Course policy
Students are not allowed to:
· Be late for classes
· Miss classes without any reason
· Talk during class by cell phone, chew gum
· Avoid wearing business dress code
· Be impolite with fellow students and teachers
Knowledge assessment
Current check - during tutorials, office hours, self study where students have :
- To be able to speak on the given subject;
- To make up typical dialogues and to reproduce them;
- To present the chosen theme, advertisement of the product, company etc.
- To complete written exercises;
- To do role plays;
- To translate (orally or written) the texts, articles according to the specialties.
Midterm examination:
- To do vocabulary and grammar checking tests.
Final examination:
- To pass exams at the end of the first and second terms
