The Absolute Participle Complex
Вукраїнській мові підрядне обставинне речення (наприклад, часу або причини) може бути замінене дієприслівниковим зворотом, якщо в головному і підрядному реченнях підмет той самий, хоч в одному з них він може бути виражений іменником, а в другому –– відповідним особовим займенником.
Наприклад: Коли Петро повернувся з Києва,він розповів нам про виставку. Повернувшись з Києва,Петро розповів нам про виставку. (В обох реченнях підмет позначає ту саму особу.)
Якщо в головному і підрядному реченнях підмети різні, то така заміна неможлива.
В англійській мові заміна обставинного підрядного речення зворотом з Participle можлива і тоді, коли в головному і підрядному реченнях підмети різні.
Наприклад: When Peter came home from Kyiv,we asked him to tell us about the exhibition. Peter coming home from Kyiv, we asked him to tell us about the exhibition.
Peter coming home from Kyiv не підрядне речення, а незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс (the Absolute Participle Complex), що складається з іменника у загальному відмінку (або особового займенника у називному відмінку) і дієприкметника. У цьому комплексі Peterвиконує роль підмета по відношенню до дієприкметника і не є підметом усього речення.
У незалежному дієприкметниковому комплексі можуть вживатися всі форми Participle.
У реченні незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс виконує функції обставини (часу, причини, способу дії, умови):
| The rain having stopped, we went home. | Коли дощ ущух, ми пішли додому. |
| The day being very fine, she went for a walk. | Оскільки день був дуже гарний, вона пішла на прогулянку. |
| Weather permitting, we'll spend our day off in the forest. | Якщо дозволить погода, ми проведемо вихідний день у лісі. |
Незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс перекладається на українську мову:
а) підрядним обставинним реченням:
| The letterbeing written, І went to post it. | Коли лист був написаний, я пішла відправити його. |
б) простим реченням, що входить до складносурядного:
| They went quickly out of the house, Jude accompanying her to the station. | Вони швидко вийшли з дому, і Джуд провів її до вокзалу. |
в) дієприслівниковим зворотом:
| Her face smiling, she came into the room. | Усміхаючись, вона увійшла в кімнату. |
Крім цього, незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс може перекладатися на українську мову головним реченням в складно-підрядному, вставним реченням, іменником з прийменником:
| She sat down at the table,her hands beginning to tremble. | Коли вона сідала за стіл, її руки починали тремтіти. |
| The evening was so dark,(the moon not having yet risen),that he could see no one twenty yards off. | Вечір був такий темний (місяць ще не зійшов), що за двадцять ярдів він нікого не міг бачити. |
| Не came into the room,his face smiling. | Він увійшов до кімнати з усміхненим обличчям. |
Незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс може вводитись прийменником with.Такий комплекс вживається у функції обставини способу дії або супровідних обставин і перекладається на українську мову здебільшого самостійним реченням або дієприслівниковим зворотом:
| She was sitting on the ground, with her head and one arm lying on a chair. | Вона сиділа долі, а голова її і одна рука лежали на стільці. |
| He was standing, with his arms crossed and his head bent. | Він стояв, схрестивши руки і опустивши голову. |

Вправа 1. Перекладіть рідною мовою, звертаючи увагу на незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс.
1. The letter being written, I went to post it. 2. The rain having stopped, we went home. 3.The day being very fine, we went for a walk. 4.They went quickly out of the house, Tom accompanying her to the station. 5. The professor being ill, the lecture was put off. 6. My task finished, I went to bed. 7. His question unanswered, he couldn’t go away. 8.The wind having stopped, they set out to walk. 9. The weather having changed, we decided to stay at home. 10. It being very late, they decided to postpone their visit. 11. The treaty having been signed, trade was at once resumed. 12. Dinner being over, we assembled in the living room. 13. Electrons moving through a wire, electrical energy is generated. 14. Any moving object can do work, the quantity of kinetic energy depending on its mass and velocity. 15. Ann stood up and ran around the desks, Tom running after her. 16. All the necessary preparations having been made, the expedition started off. 17. The cathode heated, the electrons leave the surface and move to the anode. 18. It being Sunday, the library was closed. 19. The treaty is written in the Ukrainian and English languages, both texts being equally valid.

B. Model: As my brother had locked the door, I couldn’t get into the room. –– My brother having locked the door, I couldn’t get into the room.
1. As our teacher had visited India, we asked him to tell us about that country. 2. When the match had ended, the people went home. 3. As my friend had bought the tickets beforehand, we did not need to hurry. 4. After the sun had risen, we continued our way. 5. As his sister had broken his spectacles, he had to buy a pair of new ones.
C. Model: As the bridge was destroyed, we couldn’t cross the river. –– The bridge being destroyed, we couldn’t cross the river.
1. As all shops were closed, we couldn’t buy anything. 2. As the road was being repaired, I couldn’t go there by bus. 3. As the book was being printed, we hoped to get it soon. 4. As houses are built very quickly nowadays, we’ll soon get a new flat. 5. As the waiting-room was being cleaned, the passengers were not let in.
