Roof Collapses on Crowded Water Park
This tragedy occurred at 7:15 Saturday evening, during the peak weekend crowds. Some of the visitors were at a first floor disco celebrating Valentine’s Day, while others were there for a child’s birthday party. At the moment of the collapse, almost 1,300 people were in the complex, including 200 employees.
The rescue operation was hampered by the bitter cold (minus 18 Celsius), as well as the difficulty of getting emergency equipment to the spot. Rescue workers, using sniffer dogs, worked by hand to free the survivors, many of whom required emergency treatment for injuries and exposure to the cold. The rescue teams pumped warm air into the debris in order to keep the survivors from freezing, most of whom were clad only in bathing suits. By late Sunday, Luzhkov told Channel One television “there is no hope for finding any survivors.” The roof collapse killed at least 27 people and injured scores.
