GLASGOW.

1. Onе of Britain's most productive centers of Industry, Glasgow is also an ancient city with a history of its own. For Daniel DefoeGlasgow was one of the cleanliest, most beautiful and best-built cities in Great Britain. This was the small compact Glasgow of the "Tobacco Lords" who traded with American Colonies. The industrial revolution completely changed the face of this old Glasgow. The ideaof the separate condenser for the steam engine /паровой двигатель/ dawned on the mind of a young man who worked as a mechanic in Glasgow University. His name was James Watt. Since coal and iron, engineering and shipbuilding became the chief concerns of men, labor came from the country places, from the Highlands* and fromIreland.

2. Modern Glasgow is thus a very large, widely dispersed city. Here are ship-building yards, vast engineering, iron and chemical works, extensive docks and textile factories, There are not many old, buildings and the most important is the impressive cathedral built in the early 12th century. But the new Glasgow did not wholly swallow up the old; Glasgow is also the old city above which the sonorous bell in the University tower answers the sirens of ships moving down the Clyde* towards the open sea. The Glasgow University was founded in 145О. Other notable buildings in the city include the Library, the City Chambers /здание суда/, the Royal Exchange /биржа/ and the Art Gallery which contains fine collections of paintings.

3. Glasgow is fortunate in its open space.* There are large parks within its boundaries and round its fringes, the Zoological Park and Botanic Gardens. The Town Council consists of 133 members. The city's flag is the green tree with decorations on a white background. The Council sits in full session on Thursday.
