I. What stylistic devices are used in the sentences?

  1. Monkeys dozed, dogs dreamed, classified albino rats waited predictably for the morning’s scalpels and injections.

Шансы Мэнникона сделать великое научное открытие в лаборатории Фогеля - Паульсона были весьма незначительны. Он работал в отделе детергентов и растворителей, а в задачу его входили поиски детергентов, которые разлагались бы в водных растворах. Дело в том, что в популярных журналах уже появилось несколько не слишком приятных заметок о пене в канализационных трубах и о ручьях, покрывающихся мыльным слоем, в котором гибнет форель. Мэнникон знал, что никто еще не получал Нобелевской премии за открытие нового детергента, даже такого, что не губит форель. Через неделю ему будет уже двадцать девять лет и четыре месяца.

Другие сотрудники лаборатории, помоложе, занимались лейкемией и раком матки, а также соединениями, которые сулили успех в лечении шизофрении. Был даже двадцатилетний вундеркинд, который ставил совершенно секретные опыты со свободным водородом. Весьма вероятно, что они попадут и в Стокгольм. Их вызывали на совещания руководства, мистер Паульсон приглашал их в загородный клуб и к себе домой, и они разъезжали в спортивных машинах со смазливыми девчонками, похожими на кинозвезд. В отдел детергентов мистер Паульсон не заходил никогда, а сталкиваясь с Мэнниконом в коридорах, называл его Джонсом. Еще шесть лет назад мистер Паульсон почему-то решил, что Мэнникона зовут Джонс.
