4 Translate the sentences:

5 Give an adequate translation:

1 He always left the house at eight o'clock in order that he might not miss the train. 2 This road seems longer than I thought. 3 We decided to go further in spite of the fact that the road was so bad. 4 He was born in Warsaw, so he speaks Polish very well. 5 While I was sitting there, he came up to me. 6 That needs no explanation since it is self-evident. 7 We shall order the machine provided that the price is reduced by 10 per cent. 8 They are working quickly so that they may finish early. 9 There are not so many people here as I expected. 10 He felt very ill and went to bed. 11 Will you please tell me whether he has come or not? 12 As soon as everyone was ready, I gave the signal. 13 He wore a thick overcoat lest he should catch cold. 14 Supposing you miss your train, what will you do? 15 Although I wrote to him, I have had no reply.

 

6 Give an adequate translation of the following:

1 If the patient does not accept surgical operation, fulguration will be applied. 2 If he follows doctor’s instructions he will recover quickly. 3 If you sleep well you will not complain of a headache. 4 If she went for a walk, she would catch cold. 5 If you slept well, you would not complain of a headache. 6 If you followed my advice, you would consult a dentist. 7 If he had not gone out in the rain, he would not have fallen ill. 8 If the surgical treatment had been prompt, the disease would have been curable. 9 If the patient had shown signs of shock, a blood transfusion would have been given. 10 If you examine a drop of water under the microscope, you will see some microorganisms there. 11 You would feel better, if you followed strict hygiene measures. 12 If the temperature had risen, we should have proceeded with the injection. 13 If the clinical factors are not favourable, some surgical procedure will be necessary. 14 The man would have died if he had not been operated on. 15 If you were present at the operation, I should not be anxious about its issue. 16 If even a minute focus of infection begins to develop, all the capillaries in the region involved become open for blood flow and individual vessels dilate to an obvious degree. 17 If the laboratory analyses were favourable, you would leave the clinic and return to your work. 18 The operation would have been performed without delay if the patient’s heart had been normal. 19 The doctor will not come unless he is sent for. 20 The diagnosis would not be difficult, if physicians were familiar with the characteristic clinical and roentgenographic features of the disease.

 

7 Use the required future or present tense instead of the verbs in brackets:

8 Translate the following, pay attention to neither…nor, either… or, both…and, not only…but:

9 Name the function of that:

10 Translate the following sentences and define the voice of the verbs:

1 While disinfection of the hands was neglected, universal interest was directed to combating airborne germs. 2 Treatment was instituted with penicillin and cephalothin. 3 The automatic nerves are composed of two types of fibers: the preganglionic and the postganglionic. 4 Random cultures of hands, fingers and finger tips were obtained from operating room personnel. 5 The efforts of the physicians had been directed to the struggle against obvious wound infection and its causal agents. 6 When the patient was wheeled on the buggy from the operating room to his ward two students stayed with him. 7 When the edges of the operating wound were washed the surgeon administered the solution of antibiotics into the wound and introduced a fresh gauze drain. 8 After the students visited the traumatological department they went to the other department where the patients who had undergone abdominal operations were lying. 9 As soon as his condition became better the doc­tor advised him to start his morning exercises.

11 Choose the correct form:

12 Translate the following:

1 The stimulation is carried out with the help of an electrocardiostimulator which sends regularly spaced pulses and rhythmically stimulates the heart muscle. 2 Definite success has also been achieved in the treatment of atherosclerosis and coronary insufficiency and infarction of the myocardium which are closely related to it. 3 This problem is being investigated at dozens of clinics, hospitals and dispensaries. 4 Some interesting results have already been obtained in a short period of time. 5 Of all pulmonary diseases, the one that is now attracting most interest among pulmonologists is chronic non-specific pneumonia. 6 A great deal has been done at the Institute to reveal the true nature of this complicated disease.
